A visit to the doctor signed upper right F. v. Mieris Fec. and dated 1743 oil on panel, 35,5x31,5 cm ----------- Frans van Mieris the Younger could be qualified as a late example of the Fijnschilders (literally fine-painters"), also called the Leiden Fijnschilders ('Leidse Fijnschilders'), the Dutch Golden Age painters who, from about 1630 to 1710, strove to create as natural a reproduction of reality as possible in their meticulously executed, often small-scale works. In the nineteenth century it became a label for artists like Gerrit Dou and his followers in Leiden. Dou, Frans van Mieris Sr. and Adriaen van der Werff—all among the most successful of the Dutch Baroque—became identifiable by their "fine" manner, exquisite techniques, and extreme attention to detail resulting in works with smooth surfaces completely lacking painterly brush strokes. The application of paint contrasts with the textures and style of other Dutch painters, such as Frans Hals and Dou's teacher Rembrandt van Rijn. The Fijnschilders are best known for genre scenes showing everyday life and activities, candle-lit nocturnal subjects, and trompe l'oeil "niche" paintings. It is clear that our painting by van Mieris is greatly influenced by the works of his predecessors, most notably his father and grandfather."

Oil on canvas, relined The Netherlands, around 1750 Circle of Frans van Mieris the Younger (1689-1763) - Dutch genre and portrait painter and etcher Verso on stretchers with old label, it's handwritten note to artists and design Dimensions: 68 x 91 cm Good Condition Painting from the circle of the well-known dutch painter Frans van Mieris the Younger Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 2800 EUR This painting was presumably created around 1750 within the circle of the Dutch artist Frans van Mieris the Younger. Depicted is the biblical subject of ‘Lot and his daughters’. According to the story in the Tanach and on behalf of the divine commandment, Lot and his daughters flee from the city of Sodom into the mountains, where they find shelter in a cave. Lot's daughters, desperate to find a husband, made their father drunk and share the bed with him, and eventually gave birth to their sons. The painting is in age-appropriate condition with age-related craquelure. The canvas is relined. On the central upper edge with small retouching. Partly minimal color flaking and slight color abrasions in the right image area. The stretcher measures 68 x 91 cm. The framed dimensions are 80 x 104 cm. The frame also shows signs of wear. Frans van Mieris the Younger (1689-1763) Born in Leiden, Frans van Mieris the Younger was the son of a well-established artist’s family and therefore also became a successful genre and portrait painter. Besides, he was also active as a numismatist and occasionally worked as a writer. Nov. 15, 2014

Frans Mieris the Younger, Bacchus and Ariadne

        Est: €35,000 - €45,000

Signed lower center: F. Mieris fWith a collector's stamp inscribed "DrFR" to the reverse. Frans van Mieris the Younger took after his grandfather of the same name as a painter of genre scenes, but he also painted portraits and mythological motifs, among them this signed depiction of Bacchus and Ariadne. The figures and landscape of this image are similar to a signed "Diana and Endymion" by the artist, dated 1712 (Christie's, Amsterdam, 27.11.1986, lot 46). In both paintings, the divine couple forms the centre of the composition and the landscape is characterised by extreme attention to detail in the tradition of Leiden glaze painting, but also by the warm light typical of the Italianates.
