    • Jan Micker, The Narrow Path of Virtue and Broad Road of Vice
      May. 17, 2014

Jan Micker, The Narrow Path of Virtue and Broad Road of Vice

      Est: €6,000 - €10,000

Jan Micker, The Narrow Path of Virtue and Broad Road of Vice This busy landscape shows the paths of virtue and vice. That of virtue is a narrow and arduous way leading to the top of a mountain. At the foot of the mountain we see a tall pediment bearing sculptures representing the three cardinal virtues of Christianity: Faith, love and hope. Some of the pious souls bearing crosses and seeking to climb this mountain fail along the way. In contrast, vice is represented by a splendid garden filled with representative edifices and populated by proud princes and dancing ladies. Although some are also shown attempting to walk the path of virtue, their foolishness is betrayed by their wolf's heads. That the path of vice is dominated by death and corruption is shown by the skeleton waving a banner over the entire scene. 47 x 62 cm

      Nov. 19, 2010

Micker, Jan Christiaensz.Amsterdam (around) 1598 - (before) 1664 The narrow path of virtue and the broad path of vice.

Micker, Jan Christiaensz. Amsterdam (around) 1598 - (before) 1664 The narrow path of virtue and the broad path of vice. Remains of a signature in the lower centre: Micker... Oil on wood. 46 x 62,5cm. Framed. The painting's subject refers to the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 7, verses 13 and 14 where the road to perdition is broad in contrast to the small and narrow gate and road to heaven. Micker represents this comparison impressively in a fantastic and vast landscape featuring a Renaissance garden as well as huge portal architecture which he juxtaposes with the narrow path to heaven. Provenance: Hamburg, private collection.
