BIOGRAPHY: A student of the well-known French artist Gustave Boulanger, as well as Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre and Florent Joseph Marie Willems, Metzmacher first exhibited at the Salon in 1863. He won honourable mentions in 1879 and 1899 and continued to exhibit until 1890, including at the British Royal Academy in 1883.

        A YOUNG BEAUTY CROSSING A BROOK, A HUNTER BEYOND measurements 24 by 19 1/2 in. alternate measurements 60 by 49.5 cm. signed E. Metzmacher, lower left oil on panel Condition Note: In good condition. Under UV: An area of inpainting to the back of the woman's hair, her foot outlined by inpainting; filled-in craquelure to the right of the female and above the man's shoulder. An upper right portion of the trees shows inpainting as does an area at lower right throughout the stream, and to the central tree's trunk. A ½ inch wide section of inpainting at edge of canvas, particularly at the upper left edge and to lower right edge covers frame abrasion. A few other very small inpainted strokes throughout, with a fairly heavy varnish which fluoresces elsewhere. We are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described in our catalogue.
