When you're a Belgian seaside resort situated near Ostend that feels as if you've got something to crow about, and when your name-"Cock o' the Waves"-provides all the essential figurative information, an artist designing the publicity for your locale doesn't need to make a giant creative leap in order to provide the potential traveler with interesting imagery. And so Belgian oil-specialist Melsen set down this giant white rooster lording over the beach like, well, the cock of the waves and it's a fait accompli. This poster was originally designed as promotional material for a rail line; however, the grey border-which obscures the up-top text-prevents us from identifying the specific railway.

Situated on the Zoute, Belgium's northern coast along the English Channel, De Haan is the name of both the municipality and a town. The town was constructed in 1889 by Royal Belgian decree. The charming hamlet was composed of Art Nouveau-style villas constructed and layed out by two architects. Aside from its inherent beauty, the town may be most famous as a six month stopover by Albert Einstein as he was fleeing Nazi Germany. Coq sur Mer is the French name.
