      • LUIS EGIDIO MELÉNDEZ (NÁPOLES, 1716 - MADRID, 1780)
        Oct. 31, 2024

LUIS EGIDIO MELÉNDEZ (NÁPOLES, 1716 - MADRID, 1780)

        Est: €60,000 - €90,000

Luis Egidio Meléndez (Naples, 1716 – Madrid, 1780) "Still Life with Pears, Peaches, Grapes, and Melon" Oil on canvas. Relined. 44 x 63 cm. This painting is an analogous version to the one kept in the Prado Museum, dated 1771 and of almost identical dimensions, 42 x 62 cm (Catalogue No. P000931). As stated in the Prado Museum biography of the artist: "A Spanish painter, born in Italy to a Spanish family of Asturian origin, he was the son of Francisco Antonio, the miniaturist, and nephew of Miguel Jacinto, the portraitist. He began his education in Madrid alongside his father, then attended classes at the Preparatory Board of the Academy of San Fernando and was a pupil of Louis-Michel van Loo, mastering portrait technique, as demonstrated by his magnificent Self-Portrait (Musée du Louvre). His father’s expulsion from the board, and a probable conflict with Van Loo as a result, led to his dismissal from academic studies. He travelled to Italy and later returned to Spain, where he initially worked as a miniaturist, but his most significant contribution was in still life painting, becoming one of the most distinguished still-life painters in the history of the genre. His career belongs to the second half of the 18th century, a period when the century entered a decisive phase, gradually shaped during the reign of Philip V, both by the presence of foreigners at court and by the travels of Spaniards to Italy, along with projects to reorganise artistic education, an era that would reach its peak with Goya. Meléndez's paintings are generally characterised by great sobriety, executed with a solid sense of drawing and perfectionist realism, down to the smallest details. His ordered and clear compositions, with a taste for contrasts of light and shadow, possess an intensity that recalls the best achievements of Sánchez Cotán or Zurbarán." LUIS EGIDIO MELÉNDEZ (Naples, 1716 - Madrid, 1780) "Still life with honey and bread". Oil on canvas. Attached pigment analysis and expertise of Don José Gómez Frechina.

        Est: €360,000 - €380,000

LUIS EGIDIO MELÉNDEZ (Naples, 1716 - Madrid, 1780) "Still life with honey and bread". Oil on canvas. Attached pigment analysis and expertise of Don José Gómez Frechina. Presents restorations. Measurements: 35 x 48 cm; 44 x 66 cm (frame). The style of this work is very reminiscent of the painting that currently belongs to the collection of the Prado Museum, entitled "Still life with cantarilla, bread and basket with table objects". In both we can appreciate the presence of bread and local pottery as the undisputed protagonists of the scene; however, it is the technical quality and the use of a detailed and precise brushstroke, which manages to capture the textures of each element, which is put in value in both paintings mentioned above. In this work we can appreciate the sober and naturalistic style typical of the Spanish still life school, with the use of an ocher chromatic range so characteristic of the time, also noticing the painter's interest in geometry that is reflected in the use of pure forms that serve as a base and provide volume and depth to the elements that make up this still life. Because of these characteristics, this still life can be related to the production of Luis Egidio Meléndez, a continuator of the brilliant Hispanic execution of the 17th century and author of magnificent still lifes, a genre that was his specialty, although he also worked on figure subjects. A Spanish painter born in Italy, he was the son of Francisco Antonio, the miniaturist, and nephew of Miguel Jacinto, the portraitist. He began his education in Madrid with his father and later followed the classes of the Preparatory Board of the Academy of San Fernando, being a student of Louis-Michel van Loo. The expulsion of his father from the Board determined his dismissal from academic studies, so the young Meléndez made a trip to Italy to continue his education. Upon his return to Spain, he initially worked as a miniaturist, but his preponderant role was developed in still life, becoming one of the most outstanding still life painters in the history of the genre, and undoubtedly the most brilliant of the Spanish 18th century. In fact, he is represented in the most prominent art galleries around the world, including the Prado Museum and the Louvre. Meléndez is an expert in the treatment of surfaces, showing an extraordinary ability to give an idea of the qualities of things: fruits, dead animals, ceramics, glass, cork, textiles, metals or stone. Although in some canvases he introduces a landscape background that brings them closer to the Neapolitan still life, most of his works are, in form and concept, similar to the one presented here, with several elements arranged in a clear structure on the surface of a table placed parallel to the lower edge of the painting, highlighted on a dark background that links directly with the Spanish masters of the XVII century. A master of expressive force and almost a magician of technique, Meléndez reflects, in his desire for accuracy, the principles of the enlightened world in his application to describe the elements in a way that can be understood as didactic.

Spanish school, circle of LUIS MELÉNDEZ (Naples, 1716-Madrid, 1780); XVIII century. "Couple of still lifes". Oil on canvas (x2). Relined. Measurements: 42 x 68 cm (x2). Pair of baroque still lifes in which the author, in spite of the difference, uses the same composition with the main elements arranged on an austere wooden board, without any ornamentation. These elements are arranged almost in the foreground, superimposed on each other to create space, they are arranged as a frieze. In both paintings the lighting is completely tenebrist, with the focus of light falling on the center of the scene and based on the use of whites, or feathers or eggs to provide luminosity. In one of the paintings we see fewer elements of eggs, meat, and tomatoes, while in the still life of hunting we can appreciate a greater exuberance. By the way of solving both paintings, with an orderly, clear composition and a very solid drawing, the paintings we are dealing with can be related to the school of Luis Meléndez. Meléndez's still lifes are characteristic for reflecting a great compositional sobriety. In them he uses the hallmarks of light and shadow, which bring an intensity to the painting reminiscent of the paintings of Sánchez Cotán or Zurbarán. A painter born in Italy, but from a Spanish family of Asturian origin, Luis Egidio Meléndez was the son of the miniaturist Francisco Antonio and nephew of the portraitist Miguel Jacinto. According to the Prado Museum: "He went to Italy and returned to Spain, where he initially worked as a miniaturist, but his preponderant role was developed in still life, becoming one of the most outstanding still life painters in the history of the genre. His creations have been dispersed throughout private collections and museums in Spain and abroad. The Prado Museum has a large collection of pieces by his hand, which come from the Palace of Aranjuez".

STILLLEBEN MIT KIRSCHEN, APRIKOSEN UND EINEM HONIGTOPF Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 34 x 47,5 cm. Rest. A.R. Provenienz: Privatbesitz. Spanish school, following models by LUIS EGIDIO MELÉNDEZ (Naples, 1716 - Madrid, 1780); circa 1800. "Couple of still lifes". Oil on canvas. Sizes: 51 x 37 cm (x2); 60 x 46 cm (frames, x2). Both still lifes, which differ slightly from each other, present an identical pictorial conception. Aesthetically, the author has taken the Baroque tradition as his starting point, arranging the elements on a flat surface, using a frontal perspective and playing with the different levels or heights of the composition. The lighting also has certain tenebrist reminiscences, as in both canvases the artist presents us with dark compositions with very well-defined focal points of light. Because of all these characteristics, we can relate this still life to the production of Luis Egidio Meléndez, a continuator of the brilliant Hispanic work of the 17th century and the author of magnificent still lifes, a genre which was his speciality, although he also worked on figure subjects. A Spanish painter born in Italy, he was the son of Francisco Antonio, the miniaturist, and the nephew of Miguel Jacinto, the portraitist. A master of expressive force and almost a magician of technique, Meléndez reflects, in his desire for accuracy, the principles of the Enlightenment world in his application to describe the elements in a manner that can be understood as didactic. We can find similar characteristics to those of this still life in works by Meléndez such as "Still Life with Cucumbers, Tomatoes and Containers", "Still Life with Two Partridges, Onions, Garlic and Vessels" or "Still Life with Salmon" (Prado), among others.

FRÜCHTESTILLLEBEN MIT NESPOLE IM KORB, QUITTEN UND VÖGELN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. Tadelloser Zustand. 42 x 67,5 cm. Beigegeben eine Expertise von John T. Spike, Florenz, 13. Mai 2000. Literatur). A.R. (1260601) (2) (11) Luis Meléndez, 1716 Naples - 1780 Madrid FRUIT STILL LIFE WITH LOQUAT FRUIT IN BASKET, QUINCES AND BIRDS Oil on canvas. Relined. Excellent condition. 42 x 67.5 cm. An expert's report by John T. Spike, Florence, 13 May 2000 is enclosed. The attribution of the artist of the painting on offer for sale here is based on the expert's report and further publications. According to the enclosed documentation the painting was created together with three other known still life paintings of the same format. What is particularly significant about the painting on offer for sale here is that according to scientific research based on the report by John T. Spike, Florence, this is the earliest known work by the artist. As is typical for counterpart paintings, the signature or monogram “Ls. Mz .” and date “ANO 1750” can be found on another painting. This proves that the painting on offer for sale in this lot was created together with three counterparts in Italy. Almost 40 works are held at the Museo del Prado, Madrid. A further painting is held at the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao. His still life paintings are also held by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts or the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Only very few of his works are circulating on the market outside of Spain. The painting on offer for sale here has been sufficiently documented and appreciated in scientific literature as one of the three counterparts. Provenance: According to scientific research by Mina Gregori it was held in the collection of the consule Nicolò Monteri, Oporto in the period between 1815 and 1817, who was also resident in Lisbon and his family formerly had connections to Empoliand Florence. Literature: Exhibition catalogue: M. Gregori (ed.) J.G. Prinz von Hohenzollern (president), Stille Welt - Italienische Stilleben - Arcimboldo, Caravaggio, Strozzi, Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung, Munich, December 2002 - February 2003, Electa, Milano 2002, which lists the painting on pp. 448f (Mention of the painting offer for sale). Exhibition catalogue by M. Gregori: La natura morta Italiana - da Caravaggio al settecento, Con il Patronicino del Ministero degli Affari Esteri e del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, Florence, Palazzo Strozzi, 26 June - 12 October 2003, Electa, Milano 2003.
