A direct descendant of President James Knox Polk and grandniece of Judge R.E.B. Baylor, the founder of Baylor University at Waco. McGill studied with Robert Jenkins Onderdonk in San Antonio and with William Merritt Chase in New York; Robert Reid in Paris and landscape painting at the Cape Cod School of Art, MA. Beginning in 1888, McGill was a frequent exhibitor, including works in the late 20's at the Edgar B. Davis competition at the Witte Museum. She later taught art and named the school "Edgar B. Davis School of Wildflower Painting". McGill was a member of the Southern States Art League; The San Antonio Art League; Texas Fine Arts Asso. and others. McGill's works are highly prized by collectors and she signed her works E.P. McGill.

      Eloise Polk McGill , 1868-1939, was born in Independence, Texas. She was a direct descendant of President James Knox Polk, and a grandniece of Judge R. E. B. Baylor, the founder of Baylor University, in Waco, Texas. She studied in San Antonio with Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, and in New York City with William Merritt Chase. She also studied landscape painting at the Cape Cod School of Art, in Massachusetts, and with Robert Reid in Paris, France. McGill was a member of the Southern States Art League; San Antonio Art League; and Texas Fine Arts Association. From 1888 through the late 1920s, McGill participated in the Edgar B. Davis Competition at the Witte Art Museum, in San Antonio. She later started her own art school, naming it the Edgar B. Davis School of Wildflower Painting.

Signed and titled lower left Eloise Polk McGill studied at the Art Students League under Frank Vincent DuMond, in Paris under Robert Reid, and under William Merritt Chase in New York. This painting is titled Apres L'Hermitte. This refers to Leon Augustine L'Hermitte, a very popular French Realist painter of the nineteenth century. This painting is a reinterpretation of L'Hermitte's painting Christ with the Meek, of which it is a variation rather than a copy. It is framed in a massive hand-made frame.
