          • Original Vintage Torino Esposizione Internazionale 1911 Poster by Aldo Mazza Rare
            Oct. 22, 2024

Original Vintage Torino Esposizione Internazionale 1911 Poster by Aldo Mazza Rare

            Est: $4,000 - $5,000

The 1911 Esposizione Internazionale was a world's fair held in Torino, Italy that focused on industry and labor. It was the only world's fair to be held in Italy; it coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of Italy's unification into one country. In this striking image, a female symbol of the city flies through the night sky holding a flag representing the various countries that exhibited at the event. It is a wonderful image from a period of Italian poster making that has largely been lost to history. Aldo Mazza (1880 - 1964) was an Italian illustrator who worked within the same artistic movement as Marcello Dudovitch, Adolfo Hohenstein and Leopoldo Metlicovitz in the 1920s. Based mainly in Milan, Mazza began his career as a caricaturist but was working in poster design as early as 1900. Mazza also created works for publications and painted extensively; his works can be found in Milan's National Leonardo da Vinci Museum. Mazza created famous images for the Mele department store in Naples, exciting car posters, as well as various advertisements for sporting events. His works are scarce and highly collectible. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is in good condition and has been archivally backed onto linen. There has been restoration along the fold lines and handling at the edges. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Condition B+: expert-overpainting in margins; repaired tears, small replaced losses, creases and restoration at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds. Two-sheets. The appearance of Halley's Comet in 1910 caused quite an uproar around the world. The wine distributors Dondena & Sons, in Milan, took advantage of Italy's general unease with the cosmic appearance and had Aldo Mazza to create an image of a comet in whose tail were the words "mineral water." According to that poster, the populace could "save themselves" by drinking wine. That same year, Dondena applied for a trademark for their company featuring a star enclosed in the letter "D." This poster is a glorious allegory of Italian wines, in the figure of a woman emerging from grape-ladened vines, wrapped in Italy's tri-color flag and holding aloft the company's logo. Mazza began his artistic career as a caricaturist and book illustrator. By 1900, he had begun to design posters and worked with a variety of different clients to advertise sporting events, the Mele department store, and numerous publications and exhibitions. Rare.

Chappuis, Bologna DESCRIPTION: Mazza's official promotion for Verona's first major air meet is truly a tour de force. Set against a perfectly cloudless sky, we see the statue that adorns the grave of Cangrande della Scala, Verona's ruler from 1311 to 1329; he was also the leading patron of poet Dante Alighieri. Above him, we glimpse two of the competing aircraft: a Blériot and a Voisin; an Antoinette was also flown in the events. The meet boasted 200,000 lire in prize money for the daily races, though a lack of entrants in the international speed contest meant that 40,000 lire were never awarded. Competitors included Paulhan, Efimoff, Duray, Chavez, Molon, Küller, and Cataneo—the only Italian flier. Though the event was considered a financial failure, it was touted as a success for early aviation. This is a two-sheet poster—and rare! (Art Nouveau; Aviation; Italian)

On October 3, René Thomas in his Antoinette monoplane accidentally collided with the rear of Captain Bertram Dickson’s Farman biplane. Although both survived, Dickson’s piloting career was ruined due to extreme injury. This sweeping poster by Mazza is rare and wonderful on its own; however, this particular version has been written upon by Thomas, explaining in full detail the events of that fateful day. His signature has been verified, and is surrounded by various aviation award stamps.

Inchiostri Ancora. ALDO MAZZA (1880-1964) Stab. A. Bertarelli, Milano Cond A-/Unobtrusive folds. A poster that by today's politically-correct standards wouldn't precisely be considered appropriate is nonetheless a graphically potent and humorous exageration with regard to the contrast between the colors white and black for Ancora Ink. A mischievous little girl empties the contents of an oversized bottle in order to show the profound darkness of the onyx-colored ink to the nearly-naked black child, who in turn seems to be genuinely taken aback by the profundity of the color. Though this type of ad is no longer acceptable, one does see a reemergence in the study of color contrasts, specifically by the United Colors of Benneton campaign, that is not all that different from a design such as this. The Ancora company was founded in 1907 by Giuseppe Zanini of Arona, Italy and continued to operate until 1975. 1907 39 1/8 x 58 in./99.4 x 147.3 cm

Condition B+: restoration along sharp vertical and horizontal folds; restored losses in margins; restoration in image. Two sheets. Mazza began his artistic career as a caricaturist and book illustrator. By 1900 he had begun to design posters, and he worked with a variety of different clients. He helped advertise sporting events, the Mele department store, and numerous publications. This image for a women's clothier is one of his most spectacular and sensuous posters. It depicts a lithe and graceful woman enveloping herself within the multi-colored fabrics sold here. Her beauty is such that the peacock at her feet is looking up at her jealously. The proud and beautiful peacock has often been a symbol of Art Nouveau. Extremely rare. Manifesto 215.
