  • GEORGE H. MASON, ORIGINAL OIL - CASTLE OF PETRELLA
    Jun. 22, 2024

GEORGE H. MASON, ORIGINAL OIL - CASTLE OF PETRELLA

    Est: $4,000 - $8,000

MASON, George Heming (1818-1872). Castle of Petrella. Oil on canvas. Italy, c. 1850. 7" x 13 1/2" canvas, 11 1/2" x 18 1/4" famed. This gorgeous yet understated oil painting depicts the Castle of Petrella in Italy just before sunrise. The soft light creeps over the sleeping hillside village, illuminating the craggy peak where the castle lies. George Heming Mason was a renowned English painter, once described as a genius by Millais, and seen as an important landscape artist in the late nineteenth century. Mason left England for Italy in 1844, where he remained for the rest of his life. In 1848 he was accused of espionage by papal author- ities and was nearly executed; however, he managed to escape and eventually became a thriving member of an Italian com- munity of artists. When Mason's father's Staffordshire pottery firm failed in 1848, his allowance terminated and he turned seriously to painting. In the early 1850s he met Giovanni Costa and Frederic Leighton; Costa molded Mason's style, and Leighton provided life-long financial support. Mason, Costa, and Leighton formed the Etruscan school with other foreign artists. Mason was also influenced by the work of the French artists that he saw at the Paris Exposition Universelle (1855), particularly Jules Breton and Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps. The best of Mason's early works record picturesque scenes with an unpretentious sunlit naturalism. The Castle of Petrella has a fascinatingly dark past. In 1597, dissolute nobleman Count Francesco Cenci, with his daugh- ter Beatrice and his second wife, Lucrezia, moved from Rome to the Castle of Petrella, perched high on a crag in the Abbruzzi. The castle was situated in the Kingdom of Naples just beyond the borders of the Papal States; rumor was divid- ed as to whether his purpose in moving was to devise new crimes beyond the reach of vigilant Roman authorities, or to escape his creditors. Francesco was intent on keeping Beatrice under his control in the castle indefinitely so as to prevent her marriage and the burden of a dowry. What began as residence passed into imprisonment, with Beatrice and her stepmother being confined in a room whose windows were walled up and replaced by air vents. Beatrice and her mother plotted to kill Francesco with the help of several servants, one of whom was romantically entangled with Beatrice. After the murder of Francesco, Beatrice, her mother, and the servants involved were all sen- tenced to death, in spite of the cruel conditions that inspired the murder. In the seventeenth century, fanciful accounts of the case were published that purported to have been authored immediately after the executions but may have been written decades later. One such version inspired Shelley to write his drama, The Cenci, in 1819.

GEORGE HEMING MASON (British, 1818-1872) Landscape (study) Oil on board backed by masonite 5-1/4 x 13 inches (13.3 x 33.0 cm) THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST PROVENANCE: The Fine Art Society, Ltd., London, September 1981 (label verso). George Heming Mason, the author of this poetic English landscape, was born in Witley, Staffordshire. Although trained to be a doctor, he changed course following a tour of France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy in 1844. Settling in Rome for several years, he took up painting earnestly as a profession, and upon his return to England became a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy (1857-72). Mason painted both Italian views, primarily of the Campagna, and English scenes-the latter subtly romantic in feeling. As the present study of a heath perfectly illustrates, Mason delighted in achieving effects of mist, sunset and moonlight. The influence of his quiet paintings on other romantic landscapists of the period was considerable. He died of heart disease when he was only 54.

A Drinking Fountain in the Campagna signed and inscribed 'DRINKING FOUNTAIN IN THE/CAMPAGNA'/GEORGE H. MASON A.R.A.' (on an old label on the reverse) oil on canvas 121/2 x 241/2 in. (31.8 x 61.6 cm.) PROVENANCE Commissioned by Edgar Flower, Middlehill, Worcestershire, in 1858. With The Shepherd Gallery, New York, 1994. Simon Reynolds, London, from whom acquired by the present owner in 1994. EXHIBITION London, Burlington Fine Arts Club, George Mason Memorial Exhibition, 1873, no. 5 Birmingham, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, 1895, no. 461 NOTES Commissioned in 1858, this painting is a version of one in the Tate Gallery dating from 1852. George Heming Mason was the grandson of Miles Mason, the potter. He was born at Fenton Park in Staffordshire, brought up at Wetley Abbey, near Leek, and articled to a surgeon in Birmingham. But in 1843 he left for Rome, and, with no artistic training beyond some knowledge of the work of David Cox, launched into a career as an artist. By the early 1850s he had met Arnold B”cklin and two artists who were to have a profound impact on his development, Frederic Leighton and Giovanni Costa. Leighton he idolised and was later to find a great source of moral and financial support. Costa allowed him to paint with him in the Roman campagna, and inbued with his own strong sense of poetic landscape. In 1858 Mason inherited Wetley Abbey, the family home, and returned to England to marry. His style inevitably changed as he adapted to painting the English countryside, although he retained his interest in evoking mood, particularly in a series of idyllic subjects comparable to those of his friend Fred Walker. He seems to have been well aware of the Barbizon painters, and certainly kept in touch with Costa. Like the landscapes of Leighton, Blake Richmond, Walter Crane and George Howard, his work is generally seen in the context of the Etruscan School, although this was not officially founded by Costa until 1883, eleven years after Mason's death. The present picture belongs to Mason's early Roman period, and is typical in subject matter and in the crystalline clarity of the forms, seen either in strong sunlight or deep shadow. In addition to being influenced by Costa, he seems to have been impressed at this date by such French artists as H‚bert, Decamps and Jules Breton, whose work he saw at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. Other examples of this period were included in the Mason Exhibition held at the Fine Art Society, London, in 1982. Among them were his Roman masterpiece, Ploughing in the Campagna (fig. 1), and the Tate version of the present picture (no. 27, illustrated in catalogue). This differs in a number of details. The buildings, the skyline, the foreground, the distant figures and the group of resting oxen, all show minor variations, while the tall tree at upper right is omitted. Research has yet to show if Edgar Flower, who commissioned the picture, was related to Cyril Flower, Lord Battersea, who was drawn by Frederick Sandys and owned Burne-Jones's Golden Stairs (Tate Gallery). For the Sandys portrait, see lot 174, fig. 1.
