A Roman peasant girl, oil on board, 23.5 x 13.5cm (9.25 x 5.25ins), attractive period moulded gilt frame, glazed, with early stencilled code stamped to verso of panel. George Mason studied for the medical profession, but in 1844 travelled on the continent, and settled in Rome for several years, where he decided to take up painting professionally, returning to England in 1858. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1857 and 1872. The present work is likely to have been part of the artistÕs studio sale held by ChristieÕs on 15th February 1873. (1)
