    KITAO MASANOBU: A DIPTYCH OF THE COURTESANS KOI MURASAKI AND HANA MURASAKI OF THE KADO TAMA HOUSE By Kitao Masanobu (1761-1816) Japan, dated 1784 Color woodblock print on paper. Oban diptych. Title Risshun (Early Spring), opening 2 from the printed album Yoshiwara keisei shin bijin awase jihitsu kagami (A Mirror of New Yoshiwara Courtesans with Samples of Their Calligraphy). Two leading courtesans (oiran), Komurasaki (right) and Hanamurasaki (left) of Kado-Tamaya brothel, examine bolts of fabric with their young maids. Calligraphy reproducing each courtesan's handwriting. Inscriptions: Classical-style poems (waka) are inscribed above, ‘Nen no uchi wa / na nomi nari shi o / shin-tama no / haru o machi-wabite / tatsu kasumi kana’ [After months of anticipation, / at last, during the gem-like / days of spring, / the 'early-rising mist' / becomes worthy of its name.] SIZE 37 x 49.5 cm Condition: Good condition with minor wear and slight browning of paper. Wormholes, creasing, and slightly trimmed margins. Mounted together and backed with Japan paper. Provenance: Family collection of either Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) or his son-in-law Louis (Loek) Borensztajn (1935-2021), Netherlands. Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) was an architect, art collector, dealer, and founder of the first Museum of Japanese Art in the Middle East. He became one of the world’s leading collectors of Japanese art, starting at the age of 18, and continued to collect and work as an art dealer in Berlin in the 1920s. In the 1930s Felix Tikotin fled from the Nazis and hid his collection in the Netherlands. After the war, he decided that his collection should be taken to Israel, where in 1959 and with the help of Abba Hushi, who was the mayor of Haifa, The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art was established. The Museum's collection comprises more than 8,000 items of art and crafts. Museum comparison: A closely related diptych is in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1945,1013,0.5. Measurements: 24 x 17 cm; 27 x 18,5 cm (frame). Katsukawa Shunch? was a Japanese artist of ukiyo-e, a genre of woodblock prints. His legacy encompasses various forms of artistic expression, including engraving, painting and illustration. His work, developed during the Edo period, is distinguished by his technical mastery and his contribution to the depiction of actors, beautiful women and other traditional subjects. Sant? Ky?den was a Japanese poet, writer and artist of the Edo period. His real name was Iwase Samuru. Sant? Ky?den was born in Fukagawa in Edo (present-day Tokyo). At the age of fourteen or fifteen he studied ukiyo-e with master Kitao Shigemasa, and began illustrating kiby?shi under the pseudonym Kitao Masanobu and soon began writing these novels also under the name Sant? Ky?den; several novels are labeled as written by Sant? Ky?den and illustrated by Kitao Masanobu. He wrote a large number of kiby?shi and sharebon and became a popular writer. He married twice, both of his wives being licensed workers in Yoshiwara, the pleasure district of Edo.
