Marco da Oggiono Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1470 - d. 1549

Marco d'Oggiono (c. 1470 – c. 1549) was an Italian Renaissance painter and a chief pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, many of whose works he copied.

He was born at Oggiono near Milan. Of the details of his life, we know almost nothing — not even the date of his important series of frescoes painted for the church of Santa Maria della Pace in Milan. He probably died in Milan. Luigi Lanzi gave 1530 as the date of his death, but various writers in Milan say it took place in 1540, and now the best accepted date is 1549.

He was a hard-working artist, but his work has since been criticized by some for paintings are wanting in vivacity of feeling and purity of drawing, while, in his composition, it has been well said that "intensity of color does duty for intensity of sentiment." He copied Leonardo's Last Supper repeatedly, and one of his best copies is in the possession of the Royal Academy of Arts.

      MARCO D'OGGIONO (c. 1470 - c. 1549) "Virgin and Child"

      Est: €21,000 - €28,000

Oil on panel. One of Leonardo da Vinci's disciples was Marco d'Oggiono, a painter whose life and professional career are still largely unknown today. In his production, the different copies that he made of Leonardesque originals that are found throughout the entire European continent in cities such as London, Berlin, Paris, Saint Petersburg and Turin stand out. In the Spanish collections, the famous "Adolescent Savior" of the LAzaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid has recently been attributed to him. To the list of works attributed to the painter in Spain must be added this "Virgin with Child" which, coming from a private collection, perfectly demonstrates the influence of Leonardo da Vinci on the artist. stylistically, Similar to this “Madonna” are those of the Francesco Federico Cerruti Foundation in Rivoli and that of the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan (no. 5551). These follow the same model in which the Virgin is represented in profile, but share with this work the same chromatic palette in which the luminosity of the Lateh of the figures and the intense chromaticism of the red tunic and the orange cloak create a strong contrast with the neutral background of the composition, highlighting the figures. A version by a follower of Marco d'Oggiono has appeared on the market in recent years (Pandolfini Casa D'Aste, 1/3/2017, lot 12). Although much later, it is interesting to rescue this painting because it was possibly inspired by the one shown here since it occasionally repeats the same composition. Measurements: 50.5 x 39.5 cm.

Maria mit dem Kind Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 39 x 34,5 cm. (13300586) (2) (13) Marco d’Oggiono, ca. 1475 Oggiono – ca. 1549 Milan, attributed THE VIRGIN AND CHRIST CHILD Oil on panel. Parquetted. 39 x 34.5 cm. Recorded as an assistant of Leonardo’s workshop in 1491, he created a painting in collaboration with Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio in 1494, which is held at the Berlin Picture Gallery. More works by him can also be found at the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg and the National Gallery in London. Notes: A painting is recorded at Fondazione Zeri under no. 32731, which, with a simplified background, has the same compositional features as our painting and is attributed to the named artist.

PROPERTY FROM A NOBLE EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTION MARCO D'OGGIONO OGGIONO 1470/75 - 1524 MILAN THE HOLY FAMILY oil on panel, the reverse painted with grotesques and satyrs en brunaille (see fig. 1) PROVENANCE Von Hadeln collection, Florence, until 1928 (as D'Oggiono); With an art gallery in Scandinavia (according to Sedini, see Literature); Van Diemen sale, Berlin, Graupe, 26-29 April 1935, lot 53 (as D'Oggiono); Professor Dr. Ernst Schneider, Düsseldorf, by whom given in the 1960s to a member of the family of the present owner; Thence by descent. LITERATURE AND REFERENCES W. Suida, Leonardo und sein Kreis, Munich 1929, pp. 55, 204; W. Suida, "Marco d'Oggiono, Ammerkungen und Beiträge", in Raccolta Vinciana, vol. XV-XVI, 1935-39, p. 140; B. Natale, in Zenale e Leonardo, 1982, p. 130, under cat. no. 39 (as D'Oggiono and datable to circa 1510); D. Sedini, Marco d'Oggiono, Rome 1989, p. 178, cat. no. 86, reproduced (as School of D'Oggiono; opinion based on an old photograph). CATALOGUE NOTE The attribution to D'Oggiono was first proposed by Wilhelm Suida and was further endorsed by Mauro Natale (see Literature). Sedini, knowing the painting only through an old photograph, was more tentative in his assessment and included the painting under workshop pictures in his monograph; an opinion he has since revised on seeing the painting in better photographs. The presence of the cushion on which the Christ Child sits is a direct quotation from Andrea Solario; an observation first made by Sedini in his monograph. We are grateful to Dr. Pietro Marani and Dr. Domenico Sedini who, on the basis of photographs and transparencies, have independently endorsed a full attribution to D'Oggiono. Please note that this painting is being offered for sale under a settlement agreement between the current possessor of the painting and the heirs of Jakob and Rosa Oppenheimer. The settlement agreement resolves the dispute over ownership of this painting and full title to the painting will pass to the successful bidder.

The Nativity, an extensive landscape beyond oil on panel 17 x 143/4 in. (43.4 x 37.7 cm.) PROVENANCE Senator Giacomo Frizzoni, Bergamo, in 1933. Freiherr Von Kleist, Schloss Hard bei Ermatinger: sale, Fischer, Zurich, 18 May 1933, lot 1267 (3500 Fr. to the father of the present owner). LITERATURE D. Sedini, Marco d'Oggiono tradizione e rinnovamento in Lombardia tra Quattrocento e Cinquecento, Milan, 1989, pp. 234-6, no. 131, illustrated in colour. NOTES This intimate panel was identified by Sedini in his 1989 catalogue raisonn‚ ( loc. cit. ), as the prototype of a group of pictures of this composition, of which versions exist in the Ospedale Maggiore, Milan (42.5 x 35 cm.) and the Church of Santa Maria di Canale, Tortona. Although apparently in a fairly poor state of conservation, the Milan Nativity lacks the quality and detail of the present picture - for example in the treatment of the folds of Joseph's drapery and the absence of his stick in the latter picture - and is considered by Sedini as 'una replica'. The Tortona panel shows a completely different landscape, and differing architecture. Sedini adds to this group another Nativity in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, that Suida had associated with the work of Bramantino and Luini. He considers the quality of the present picture as 'superior to that of the others in the delicacy and balance of the composition' and labels it 'the prototype of a high level, from which derive the others'. SALESROOM NOTICE Please note that this picture is accepted by Dr. Domenico Sedini as by the Master of the Nativit… di Tortona ( loc. cit. ). Please note that the estimate is: œ40,000-60,000.
