Marcius-Simons 36.81 x 48.03 in. 93.5 x 122.0 cm Provenance : Collection Gérard Lévy ; Puis par descendance Né à New York, Marcius-Simons s’installe dès sa prime jeunesse à Paris, où il suit l’enseignement de Jehan-Georges Vibert, avant de connaître un certain succès au salon à partir de 1892 comme peintre d’histoire et de scènes de genre. Influencé pendant un temps par Laurence Alma Tadema et Richard Wagner, il privilégie les sujets symbolistes et participe aux Salons de la Rose+Croix de 1893 à 1897. Fortes d’une touche peu à peu plus libre et fragmentée, ses œuvres traduisent une atmosphère singulière empreinte de wagnérisme. L’artiste entreprend au tournant du siècle une importante série illustrant Parsifal, qui suscite les éloges de Louis Vauxcelles : « Les seules influences que j'entrevois en cette peinture mystérieuse sont les crépuscules dorés de Claude Lorrain ; les flamboiements et les incendies de Turner ; les figures s'apparenteraient volontiers à celles de Gustave Moreau, de qui Marcius Simons affectionne les « bleus poitrails de paon » et les violets intenses ; et le dessin de certains visages évoque aussi peut-être, le type anglo-saxon des éphèbes de Burne Jones. Marcius-Simons studied in Paris, and exhibited at the Paris salon in 1882. He also exhibited at the Salons of the Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts (Paris), from 1891-94. He first painted genre scenes, but his success came later, with a series of symbolist works, emphasizing a dramatic color scheme, as seen in this example. By 1894, he turned his attention to illustrating operatic themes, and worked as a set designer in Bayreuth, Germany, at the Wagner Theatre until his death.
