Item Overview

Description

Marcius-Simons studied in Paris, and exhibited at the Paris salon in 1882. He also exhibited at the Salons of the Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts (Paris), from 1891-94. He first painted genre scenes, but his success came later, with a series of symbolist works, emphasizing a dramatic color scheme, as seen in this example. By 1894, he turned his attention to illustrating operatic themes, and worked as a set designer in Bayreuth, Germany, at the Wagner Theatre until his death.
