Marchetti (Marco, c.1528-1588), Attributed to. Design for the frieze decoration of the cove of a ceiling, with a view of the Colosseum, pen and brown ink, brown wash, 135 x 420 mm (5 1/4 x 16 1/2 in), under glass, laid onto old paper support, some old folds and possible splitting repaired, minor scuffs and abrasions, most notably to the far right of the sheet, minor spotting and browning, framed, [late 16th century] *** The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, hold a drawing by Marchetti that appears close to the present sheet, showing a Design for a wall elevation with a fireplace and door opening, and seems to uphold the traditionally understood attribution [see acc. no. 2014.754]. Marco Marchetti was a prolific draughtsman, and many of his drawings are held in major public collections. In particular, the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe at the Uffizi in Florence offers a corpus of hundreds of pieces, mainly dating from the last twenty years of the artist's activity.

Attributed to Marco Marchetti, called Marco da Faenza, Italian c.1526-1588- Study for a wall or façade with a putto in a niche; pen, brown ink and brown wash on laid paper, bears inscription 'M MARCHETTI' on the reverse of the mount, 12.1 x 9.6 cm. (mounted / unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Marco da Faenza is best known as a designer and a painter of grotesque decorations. The early years of his career were spent mainly in Rome, where in around 1553 he decorated some of the rooms of the Palazzo Ricci Sacchetti. Giorgio Vasari writes that he was in great demand as a painter of 'grottesche', and praises his work very highly, as did the later biographer Giovanni Baglione, who described the artist as a ‘gran maestro’ in the field of decorative painting. By the mid-1550s Marchetti was working in Florence, where he executed an extensive series of grotesque decorations and ceiling paintings in the rooms of the Palazzo Vecchio, under the supervision of Vasari. The decorative 'grottesche' of the rooms of the Quartiere degli Elementi in the Palazzo Vecchio are perhaps the finest manifestation of his talents in this field. Comparable drawings for wall decorations by da Faenza are in the Princeton University of Art Museum in New Jersey, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and the Uffizi in Florence.

The sheet dimensions are 21.3 x 20.9 cm, the framed dimensions are 64.5 x 50 cm. Accompanied by Giorgio Vasari, Marchetti also painted a series of frescoes in the Palazzo Vecchio which show the Life of Hercules. Another of his most celebrated work is the altarpiece which he painted in 1580 representing the Martyrdom of St. Catherine of Alexandria, in the church of San Antonio in Faenza. He was a protegé of Pope Gregory XIII, and after the death of Lorenzo Sabatini in 1576 he supervised all the Grotesques in the Logge and the Stanze. The present drawings must be of a later date if the lion in the lower right is indeed the emblem of Sixtus V. Similar designs were also used in the decoration of elaborate doors, see for instance, the project for a door panel by Prospero Antichi for the Basilica at Loreto (M.L. Madonna, Roma di Sisto V: Le Arti e la Cultura, exhibition catalogue, Rome, Palazzo Venezia, 1993, p. 351, cat. no. 3, reproduced).

NOTES The type of the figures and the handling of the wash are close to that of drawings by Marchetti in the British Museum (J. Gere and P. Pouncey, Artists working in Rome, c.1550 to c. 1640, London, 1983, nos. 212-6, pls. 202-4) and the Louvre (C. Monbeig-Goguel, Vasari et son temps, Paris, 1972, nos. 59-64). Vasari in his Life of the Painters describes Marchetti's 'widespread activity in Rome and his unrivalled skill in Grotesque decoration' (J. Gere and P. Pouncey, op. cit., p. 123).
