Item Overview

Description

Design for a candelabrum pen and brown ink, brown wash, irregularly shaped 281 x 141 mm. NOTES The type of the figures and the handling of the wash are close to that of drawings by Marchetti in the British Museum (J. Gere and P. Pouncey, Artists working in Rome, c.1550 to c. 1640, London, 1983, nos. 212-6, pls. 202-4) and the Louvre (C. Monbeig-Goguel, Vasari et son temps, Paris, 1972, nos. 59-64). Vasari in his Life of the Painters describes Marchetti's 'widespread activity in Rome and his unrivalled skill in Grotesque decoration' (J. Gere and P. Pouncey, op. cit., p. 123).
