RUTILIO DI LORENZO MANETTI (Italy, c. 1571 -1639) "The ecstasy of St. Catherine of Siena". Oil on canvas. Relined. It presents restorations.

      Est: €26,000 - €28,000

RUTILIO DI LORENZO MANETTI ( Italy, c. 1571 -1639) "The ecstasy of St. Catherine of Siena". Oil on canvas. Relined. It presents restorations. Measurements: 176 x 119 cm. Saint Catherine of Siena is shown kneeling, as if she had just fallen before the figure of Jesus, who holds with his right hand the heart of the saint, while with his left hand he grabs her hand. Formally it is a clearly baroque work in its composition, variegated and marked by diagonal lines that determine a zigzag reading of the scene. In fact, the work is largely reminiscent of the painting of the Italian artist Rutilio di Lorenzo Manetti, who immortalized the saint on numerous occasions as witnessed by his painting of St. Catherine of Siena holding Christ or St. Catherine of Siena writing. Rutilio di Lorenzo Manetti was an Italian painter of late Mannerism or proto-Baroque, active mainly in Siena. He was taught by local artists Francesco Vanni and Ventura Salimbeni. It is known that he collaborated with Raffaello Vanni. His masterpieces include his contributions to the Casino Mediceo, where he worked alongside Matteo Rosselli, Giovanni Lanfranco and Cesare Dandini. It should be noted that the Genoese school was one of the most relevant of the time, not only because of the enrichment of the city that led to the rebirth of culture, but also because it was the epicenter of numerous painters such as Van Dyck, Peter Paul Rubens, and Procaccini, among others. This convergence of artists was a great inspiration in the development of Genoese painting, which drew from such diverse sources as Flemish painting, or the Lombard school, giving rise to a very personal and characteristic idiosyncrasy. Born in Siena around 1347, at the age of seven Catherine of Siena took a vow of virginity. As her mother wanted to marry her off, she shaved her head. Received into the Third Order of St. Dominic at the age of sixteen, she led an ascetic life in the convent that ruined her fragile health. She professed a particular devotion to St. Agnes of Montepulciano. According to legend, when Catherine visited the tomb of St. Agnes, and was bending over the body of the saint to kiss her foot, the saint raised it to the height of her lips. She was glorified for having contributed to bring Pope Gregory XI to Rome from Avignon. On the occasion of the Western Schism, she took the side of Urban VI. She died in Rome in 1380 and was canonized in 1461. It presents restorations.

(Siena 1571–1639) Saint Jerome writing, oil on canvas, 112.5 x 84 cm, framed Provenance: Private European collection We are grateful to Gianni Papi for suggesting the attribution after the examination of the present painting in the original. This painting is a previously unpublished work by Rutilio Manetti, dating from his artistic maturity and as such it is a significant addition to his oeuvre. The composition depicts Saint Jerome, intent on transcribing the Holy Scriptures, which according to tradition he translated from Greek into Latin. The saint is portrayed as an elderly scholar with the traditional attributes of a skull, the symbol of the transience of life, and a lion in the background. The painting can be compared to Manetti’s Saint Jerome supported by two Angels in the Monte dei Paschi di Siena collection, signed and dated ‘RUTI.US f, 1628’ (see A. Bagnoli, Rutilio Manetti: 1571-1639, exhibition catalogue, Florence 1978, pp. 117, 51). A careful study reveals that Manetti painted the arms, the folds in the skin and the area with the skull and books in a comparable manner. Stylistic similarities can also be discerned in The Holy Family in the Pinacoteca Comunale, Faenza (inv. no. 8), in the white drapery, which can be compared to the saint’s robe in the present painting, beneath his red cloak. Rutilio Manetti was one of the first Sienese artists to adopt painterly innovations derived from Federico Barocci, showing an interest in the depiction of human emotion with graceful rendered figures, such as the Saint Jerome in the present painting. Manetti’s first documented paintings date from 1597 and were executed in the Sala del Concistoro in the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena, under the guidance of his masters, Francesco Vanni and Ventura Salimbeni. It was only around the 1620s that Manetti’s painterly style began to evolve in the direction of Caravaggism, the period to which the present painting can be dated.

1, Sienne, église San Giovannino in Pantaneto). MARIA MAGDALENA ALS BÜßERIN IM GEBET MIT ENGELN Öl auf Leinwand. 96 x 72, 5 cm. In Goldrahmen.

CATALOGUE NOTE Manetti's oeuvre is broadly characterised by two distinct phases in his production: the paintings which pre-date his trip to Rome in 1615 and those that come afterwards. Manetti was born in Siena and his early works are strongly reminiscent of those of his sienese contemporaries, Francesco Vanni and Ventura Salimbeni. His trip to Rome brought him into contact with the paintings of Caravaggio and Guercino, amongst others, and his paintings take on a much stronger, more naturalistic, and altogether more "caravaggesque" feel after this date. The present composition clearly falls into the latter category and the prolific use of red, in particular the cloak of the turbaned man, are reminiscent of Florentine Seicento painting and this might suggest a date in the 1620s, when Manetti was in Florence. The figure of the man lower left would appear to be a portrait; most likely that of the patron who commissioned the work, given his prominent role in the miraculous event.
