Thomas Malton the Younger (1748-1804) Perspective

Thomas Malton the Younger (1748-1804) Perspective View of the Design for A Cast Iron Bridge ..., [in] place of the Present London Bridge, engraving with colour aquatint, drawn and aquatinted by Malton, engraved by Lowry, 1801, published by Ackermann, 640 x 1250mm. (25 1/8 x 49 1/4 in). In 1799 a competition was held in order to decide on a replacement design for the old London Bridge; at this point the bridge was over 600 years old. The current work illustrates Thomas Telford's (1757-1834) proposal, which was for a single iron arch to cover the entire 180m section. It was rejected as unfeasible and impractical. John Rennie's (1761-1821) design went on to win the competition.

Malton (Thomas). MaltonÕs Oxford, 4 original parts, pub. T. Bensley for T. Malton, March 1802-January 1804, 24 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates, tissue guard to each, some light marginal spots, original wrappers, paper labels to upper wrappers, a few stains, contained in modern cloth, folio. Thomas Malton Òthe youngerÓ (1748-1804) had published A Picturesque Tour Through the Cities of London and Westminster in 1792, using the new medium of aquatint. He was engaged on Views of Oxford, completing the fourth part, when he died in 1804, leaving six etched plates intended for a fifth part, these along with the original 24 aquatints above appearing together in the 1810 reprint. two, pen and black ink and watercolour over pencil on laid paper Quantity: 2 CATALOGUE NOTE In 1741 Ranelagh House and Gardens, once home to Lord Ranelagh, Paymaster General to the Forces, were bought by a syndicate led by Mr Lacy, patentee of Drury Lane Theatre and Sir Thomas Robinson, M.P., and the following year they were opened as pleasure gardens. The highlight was a large rococo rotunda built by William Jones, a Surveyor to the East India Company, into which people were admitted for 12d. As seen in the present watercolours, the Rotunda was a large building measuring 150ft in diameter and it was heated in the winter by a large fireplace in the centre. Around the outside were booths where visitors could relax, drink tea and listen to the concerts which frequently took place. The Rotunda attracted the most illustrious musicians and Mozart once played there. Ranelagh Gardens were an immediate success and Horace Walpole wrote soon after they opened 'It has totally beat Vauxhall...You can't set your foot without treading on a Prince, or Duke of Cumberland.' In 1803, the rotunda was used for the last time and two years later it was demolished. The grounds are now part of Chelsea Hospital Gardens.
