M.84.165 Le modèle original en plâtre de cette œuvre représentant la prêtresse gauloise Velléda attendant le geôlier Eudore dont elle s'est éprise connut un franc succès lors de sa présentation au Salon de 1839. Son auteur, Etienne Hippolyte Maindron, élève de David d'Angers à l'École des beaux-arts dès 1827, la représente telle qu'elle est décrite dans le livre IX des " Martyrs " de Châteaubriand publié en 1809 et dont s'inspire l'artiste. La transposition dans la matière, si bien réussie, de la destinée funeste de cette héroïne a donné à cette sculpture le statut de " héraut " du courant romantique. En réponse à l'enthousiasme du public, le marbre réalisé en 1844 et présenté dans les jardins du Luxembourg fut suivi de la production de nombreux d'exemplaires d'édition en différents matériaux et dimensions. J. BARROIS cast bronze medallic plaquette, bust in very high relief left, his name behind in script, "A. J. Barrois", signed below truncation, ‘H.         signed: MAINDRON. and inscribed Gossin ainé / terre cuite (Paris) and entitled VELLÉDA terracotta CATALOGUE NOTE Maindron's marble of Velléda was commissioned in 1843 by the Ministry of the Interior for the Jardin de Luxembourg, where it remains. It was exhibited at the Salon of 1844 and the plaster model (1839 Salon) is in the Musée d'Angers. A second version was ordered for 8,000 francs for the Tuileries and is now in the Louvre. Maindron chose to represent the high-priestess of Germany and Gaul, who led a rebellion from the Hartz mountains against Vespasian in 70BC, as she is described by Chateaubriand in Les Martyrs: 'elle resta longtemps appuyée contre un arbre à regarder la forteresse'.
