Le Thi Luu (1911-1988), a gouache on silk painting depicting two children playing in the garden with a basket of fruit. Signed lower right. Housed in a gilded wooden frame. Has a Gallerie J. Le Chapelin label inscribed in French on the verso. Le Thi Luu was a Vietnamese painter, one of the few women to enter the Fine Arts School of Indochina in Hanoi. She later moved to Paris where her artistic style was heavily influenced by French impressionist. Her work greatly contributed to the emergence of Vietnamese modernism.

Le Thi Luu was a painter born in Vietnam, was one of the very few women to enter the Fine Arts School of Indochina in Hanoi, and the first to have a career as a professional artist. She successfully threw off the Confucian yoke that still weighed women down in the 1930s. She was one of the Vietnamese quartet who went to live in France in the late 1930s. She was particularly drawn to subjects involving women and children. Her style was relatively classical, but she emphasized the expression of emotion through her gentle line and color, and her work contributed to the emergence of Vietnamese modernism. Having arrived in France at a very young age, Madame K and her husband, who had settled in Paris, spend time with artists from the Indochina School of Fine Arts living in France. If her husband likes to play cards and chat with Lê Phổ or Vũ Cao Đàm, she is equally fond of Lê Thị Lựu and Paulette Lê Phổ. They collect the works of their artist friends whom they appreciate so much and with whom they share so many good memories. Lê Thị Lựu a painter born in Vietnam, was one of the very few women to enter the Fine Arts School of Indochina in Hanoi, and the first to have a career as a professional artist. Arrivée très jeune en France, Madame K. côtoie avec son époux installé à Paris les artistes de l’École des Beaux-Arts d’Indochine vivant en France. Si son mari aime jouer aux cartes et discuter avec Lê Phổ ou Vũ Cao Đàm, elle affectionne tout autant Lê Thị Lựu et Paulette Lê Phổ. Ils collectionnent les oeuvres de leur amis artistes qu’ils apprécient beaucoup et avec qui ils partagent tant de bons souvenirs. Lê Thị Lựu est une artiste-peintre d'origine vietnamienne. Elle est une des rares femmes étudiantes de l'École des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine, basée à Hanoï et la première qui poursuivra une carrière de peintre professionnel. Lê Thị Lựu fait partie des femmes ayant réussi à se libérer de ce joug confucéen encore marqué dans les années 1930. Avec les peintres Mai Trung Thứ, Lê Phổ et Vũ Cao Đàm, elle compose ce quatuor vietnamien qui s'installe en France à la fin des années 1930. Elle affectionne particulièrement les thèmes impliquant les femmes et les enfants. Son style est plutôt classique, mais l'expression des émotions est mis en exergue par la douceur des lignes et des couleurs. Son travail est un témoignage de la naissance du modernisme vietnamien. Victor Tardieu, directeur de l'École des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine aurait même comparé le style de Lê Thị Lựu à celui de Paul Cézanne. Bộ sưu tập của Madame K Đến Pháp khi còn rất trẻ, Madame K và chồng, người đã định cư ở Paris, dành thời gian giao lưu cùng các họa sĩ của Trường Mỹ thuật Đông Dương sống ở Pháp. Họ sưu tập các tác phẩm của những người bạn nghệ sĩ này, những người mà họ vô cùng trân trọng và đã chia sẻ rất nhiều kỷ niệm đẹp. Lê Thị Lựu là một họa sĩ gốc Việt. Bà là một trong những nữ sinh hiếm hoi của Trường Mỹ thuật Đông Dương tại Hà Nội và là người đầu tiên sẽ theo đuổi nghề họa sĩ chuyên nghiệp. Lê Thị Lựu là một trong những phụ nữ thành công trong việc thoát khỏi ách thống trị của Nho giáo vẫn còn ghi dấu trong những năm 1930. Cùng với các họa sĩ Mai Trung Thứ, Lê Phổ và Vũ Cao Đàm, bà thuộc về bộ tứ những. người Việt Nam định cư ở Pháp vào cuối những năm 1930. Bà đặc biệt thích những chủ đề liên quan đến phụ nữ và trẻ em. Phong cách của bà khá cổ điển, nhưng việc thể hiện cảm xúc được làm nổi bật bởi sự mềm mại của đường nét và màu sắc. Tác phẩm của bà là minh chứng cho sự ra đời của ghệ thuật hiện đại Việt Nam. Victor Tardieu, giám đốc của Trường Mỹ thuật Đông Dương, thậm chí còn so sánh phong cách của Lê Thị Lựu với phong cách của Paul Cézanne.

Son frère, Dương Bích Liên (1924-1988), est connu pour avoir été un grand artiste peintre et membre, plus en retrait de par son tempérament réservé, du groupe des "Quatre Piliers", au côté notamment de Bùi Xuân Phái (1920-1988) et de Nguyễn Sáng (1923-1988). Distant et tourmenté, ce dernier ne concevait la peinture que comme un acte vital. Son unique action publique fut sa participation au mouvement Nhan Van Giai Pham. > Nous présentons ici une œuvre exécutée par l'une des rares femmes étudiantes de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine, dirigée par Victor Tardieu et sise à Hanoï, et la première à avoir embrassé une carrière d'artiste-peintre professionnelle : Le Thi Luu. Cette ci compte parmi le quatuor des quatre peintres vietnamiens qui s'installèrent en France à l'année des années 1930 au côté de Mai Trung Thu, de Le Pho et de Vu Cao Dam. Elle s'adonna plus particulièrement à la peinture de femmes et d'enfants. Son style, du reste, y est parfaitement adapté : douceur des lignes et légèreté des couleurs, notamment. Le Thi Luu is considered one of the most important Vietnamese women artists. She entered the Fine Arts School of Indochina in 1936, shortly after it was established in Hanoi by Victor Tardieu. Among her fellow students were Le Pho and Vu Cao Dam and they were considered the premier group of first generation artists. Le Thi Luu travelled to Paris in 1940 and was unable to return to Vietnam because of the war. She and her husband lived in Guinea for several years, and returned to France in 1953, where she remained for the rest of her life.
