    "An LNER booklet claimed that there was nowhere else in England where a jaded businessman could so easily find 'a restful remoteness from the wearying city life' than the Broads, and compared them to the Adirondack Lakes of New York State" (Railway Posters, p. 127). The Broads are indeed one of Britain's premier wildlife habitats, the home of Chinese water deer, kingfishers, herons and great crested grebes. Comprised of a total of fourteen Broads-large lakes formed out of medieval peat diggings-the inland waterways are best explored by boat, the option proffered by Lingstrom in this poster featuring a superlatively flattened perspective and repeating simplified shapes. "After studying at the central School of Arts and Crafts and Heatherleys, [Lingstrom] was commissioned by the Norwegian and Swedish governments to do Scandinavian drawings for English travel propaganda.     FREDA LINGSTROM (1893 -1989) BROADS / HOLIDAYS AFLOAT. 39 1/2x24 1/4 inches. The Avenue Press, London. Condition B+: creases and discoloration at edges, some affecting image. Of Swedish descent, Lingstrom studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. "She was commissioned by the Norwegian and Swedish governments to do Scandinavian drawings for English travel propaganda. She designed posters and booklet covers for the LNER and was known for her landscape paintings." (Railway p. 156). She was also a writer. In the late 1940s she worked for Britain's BBC Television, and in 1951 she was appointed head of BBC Children's Television department. Her posters fluctuate between realistic landscapes and modernistic designs, such as this one which presents a graphic and geometric rendering of the sails and the water.
