Gysbrecht Leytens: Winter Landscape with a Lumberjack

      Est: €18,000 - €20,000

LEYTENS, GYSBRECHT Antwerp 1586 - 1643/56 Title: Winter Landscape with a Lumberjack. Technique: Oil on copper. Measurement: 22 x 33cm. Frame: Framed. Certificate: Walther Bernt, Munich, 23rd May 1972. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Like the fine ramifications in a human vascular system, the snow-covered branches stretch out in all directions of a frosty winter's day that lies silent and icy over a Flemish landscape. Under the weight of the snow, the branches bend and twist, narrowing like a canyon into a surreal corridor that seems like the gateway to another world. The giant, overpowering trees lead a life of their own and seem, as it were, humanised, while the people underneath are more reminiscent of small, crawling insects struggling to survive under their protection. The otherwise fertile body of water is frozen over. So the dead branches remain the only raw material that nature instantly reveals. The crouched posture of the brushwood gatherers makes the enormous hardship and toil of their work clear, and even the bone-chilling cold almost tangible. The Flemish painter Gysbrecht Leytens devoted himself almost exclusively to snow-covered landscapes in his paintings and is therefore regarded as a "poet of frost". The artist, who trained in Antwerp in the workshop of Jacques Vrolyck and belonged to the Guild of St Luke, stages it in its two essences - the destructive and the protective forces of nature - between magical winter magic and the recurring scourge of man. A typical feature of his work is the innovation of a reduced colour palette of blue-grey and yellow-brown tones, with which he makes cold and warmth visible as if on a thermograph. WALDLANDSCHAFT MIT RASTENDEN AN EINEM FLUSSUFER Öl auf Holz. 31,5 x 44,5 cm. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Jan de Maere, Rambrouch, 18. Juni 2022, in Kopie. Please note the exact Buyer’s Premium charges which can be found in the Conditions of Sale in the Terms below. (Antwerp 1586 – before 1656) A winter landscape with travellers on horseback, outside a town, oil on panel, 55 x 80 cm, framed Provenance: Renier d’ Udekem de Guertechin, Belgium The present winter landscape is characterised by the graphic handling of the trees with snow-bound branches on either side and the gabled roofs of the village beyond and is a fine example of the oeuvre of Gijsbrecht Leytens. The soft light and the hazy ambience of the chill season in the current panel are hallmarks of the ‘Master of the Winter Landscapes’ as he was previously known until being identified by P. F. J. J. Reelick in the 1940s. Trained in the Antwerp workshop of Jacques Vrolyck, Leytens was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke there in 1611. Seventeenth century inventories record that the staffage in his compositions were painted by collaborators such as Frans Francken II and Sebastian Vrancx. It has been suggested that the figures in the present composition are by Pieter Snayers (Antwerp 1592–1667 Brussels).

Leytens?), in: Oud Holland, LIX, 1942, no.12. - Greindl, E.: Contribution à la connaissance du style de Gysbrecht Leytens, in: Pantehoen XXXI, 1973, S. 262, No. 20.

P.F.J.J. Reelick was the first to tentatively identify the artist with Gysbrecht Leytens in an article over half a century ago (see Oud Holland, 1942, vol. LIX, pp. 74-79), and this opinion was subsequently confirmed by Dr. Ursula Härting with the discovery and publication of a signed work (see U. Härting, 'Der Meister der Winterlandschaften, der Maler Gysbrecht Leytens', in Die Kunst, 1988, vol. I, p. 27). This is a typical example of the artist's work and the rows of trees in the background are repeated in another painting by Leytens sold in these Rooms, 11 December 1991, lot 53.

      Est: $23,000 - $30,360

A winter landscape with woodcutters by a frozen river oil on copper 23.4 x 32.3 cm. PROVENANCE with D. Koetser, Zrich, 1972. NOTES P.F.J.J. Reelick was the first tentatively to identify the artist, then known as the Master of the Winter Landscapes, in 'Bijdrage tot Identificatie van den Meester der Winterlandschappen (G. Leytens?)', Oud Holland, 1942, LIX, pp. 74-9. His proposal was confirmed when a fully signed work was published by U. H„rting in 'Der Meister der Winterlandschaften, der Maler Gysbrecht Leytens', Die Kunst, 1988, I, p. 27. The present lot is a characteristic work by the artist, particularly in the graphic rendition of the trees with the snow-covered branches, closing off the composition on the left, as well as the subtle depiction of the hazy atmosphere of a winter's day. It is comparable to the picture sold in these Rooms, 6 November 2000, lot 62, which showed a very similar composition with minor changes in the staffage and with the omission of a watermill. It was not uncommon for the artist to return the same motifs and composition; another similar work to the present piucture is that on panel, 51 x 75 cm., in the Mus‚e des Beaux-Arts, Nancy. Sold with a certificate by Dr. Walther Bernt, dated 23 May 1972.
