Attributed to Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764-1820) Small Drawing of a Mountainous Landscape

    Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Attributed to Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764-1820) Small Drawing of a Mountainous Landscape Inscribed, "Copied from Book .../ View of the ... Lake from Coleman's Age (Eye?)," l.l., the backing paper later inscribed, "Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764-1820)/ Architect, Engraver, Traveler, Naturalist/ Latrobe's View of America 1795-1820/ Published for the Maryland Historical Society by Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 1985," watercolor on paper, framed. (7 1/2 in. x 9 1/2 in. (sight)) Note Benjamin Latrobe had many talents, aside from his work in architecture and engineering. As a traveler, he documented the landscapes, habits, and people he encountered, and had a specific fascination with the contrast of the American landscape to that of his native European scenery. As he stated in his journal in 1806, "We have for instance no where bold and bare Mountains connected with large Masses of Water," and he went further to describe the topography in terms of the sublime, a concept that resonated with writers, artists, and thinkers during the early 19th century: "Water scenery in immense expanse combined with wood." While the specific location of this watercolor drawing is unknown, it represents Latrobe's documentation of the sublime in nature, and may be a generalized depiction of a place from memory. The overall style of the work correlates to Latrobe's other watercolor drawings, many of which have been published. See Edward C. Carter II, John C. Van Horne, and Charles E. Brownell, Latrobe's View of America, 1795-1820: Selections from the Watercolors and Sketches (Yale University Press: New Haven and London, 1985), pg. 10-12. 9 1/2 in. x 11 1/2 in. (frame)

Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764-1820) the center square pump house, circa 1800 Unsigned, inscribed ' The Center House' watercolor, pencil, pen and ink on paper, framed. H: 12 3/4 in. W: 22 1/2 in. (sight) PROVENANCE: Benjamin Henry Latrobe, America's first professionally trained architect was born in England to Moravian parents. He received an extraordinarily rich education in languages, music, science and the arts. He traveled widely and served apprenticeships in architecture and engineering before arriving in Virginia in 1793. He moved to Philadelphia in 1798 and was commissioned to design The Bank of Pennsylvania, the first major structure in the Greek Revival style in America. In 1800, Latrobe began work on the Philadelphia Waterworks. He proposed the use of steam powered pumps to bring water from the Schuylkill River to Center Square. There, his temple-form marble Pump House housed the steam engine that pumped water to a holding tank on the upper floor, and then distributed water throughout the city by gravity through wooden pipes. Center Square became a popular gathering spot and was used until the construction of the Fairmount Waterworks in 1812. The structure was demolished in 1828. Latrobe also served as Surveyor of the Public Buildings of the United States. He worked on numerous public buildings including The White House and The United States Capitol Building. This watercolor is one of the few extant drawings of Latrobe's Philadelphia work. A comprehensive report and extensive research accompanies the lot.
