Notes

PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN
Born in 1764 near Pudsey in Yorkshire, Benjamin Henry Latrobe later acquired fame as an architect and engineer in America, particularly in Washington. His depiction of East Grinstead, a town in East Sussex about 30 miles south of London, however, was executed in September 1795, two months before he made his Atlantic voyage. Before he left for the New World Latrobe designed several houses including Ashdown House and Hammerwood Park near East Grinstead.
