JOHN LATHAM (1740-1837) A General Synopsis of Birds. London: vol. I for Benj. White, vols. II-III for Leigh and Sotheby, 1781-1785. 3 vols in six. [With:] Supplement to the General Synopsis of Birds. London: Leigh and Sotheby, 1787 & 1801. 2 vols. [And:] Index Ornithologicus. London: Leigh and Sotheby, 1790. 2 vols. Together 10 vols, small 4° (236 x 187mm). 8 etched titles with hand-coloured vignettes, and 142 hand-coloured etched plates by and after the author. (Occasional light spotting, text offset onto plate CVII, not touching image.) Contemporary tree calf, spines gilt, with red and green morocco labels lettered in gilt (vols IV, VI and VII rebacked, old spines expertly laid down, vols I, III, V and X joints cracked but firm). FIRST EDITIONS. A FINE SET IN A HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY BINDING. Latham's work forms an English parallel to Buffon's Histoire naturelle (1770-83), which was nearing completion at the time, and includes much material not available to Linnaeus. Latham was able to include species recently discovered by explorers in Australia, the Pacific and the Americas, examples of which were flooding into England at the time. In his division of the birds into two main groups, land birds and water birds, Latham follows the system which Ray employed in his edition of Willoughby's Ornithology (1678). However, whilst the birds are referred to by their vernacular names, the list of synonyms included under each species does include the Linnean name as well, and in the classification of genera the system followed is mainly that of Linnaeus. Anker 277-279; Sitwell p.114; Nissen IVB, 532; Wood p.427. (10)

        Est: £3,000 - £5,000

[Latham, John, 1740-1837]. British Zoology [by Thomas Pennant], 6 vols. (including 2 vols. Plates), Warrington, 1776-77, additional eng. title to each text vol., vol. 4 lacks general title, plt. contents leaves bound with plts. as two supplementary plt. vols., a total of 339 plts. including a few folding or hand-col., all apparently complete as listed in spite of a few anomalies such as plt. 16 to vol. 1 bound as part-title within text vol., the text vols. interleaved with blanks throughout (every third leaf) and heavily annotated with additional information, the majority seemingly in the hand of the naturalist John Latham whose ownership signature appears at the front of vol. 4 and second plt. vol. 'John Latham, Romsey', some additional pen and pencil marginalia to text leaves and some pencil notes to plts. (particularly crabs and shells), many of these notes again seemingly in Latham's hand but with some later additions and pasted in news cuttings, probably by the later owner R[ichard] L[onguet] Orlebar [1806-1870] of Hinwick House, Bedfordshire, whose ownership signature appears below that of John Latham in the final plate volume, additionally several sketches presumed by Latham, in vol. 3 a natterjack toad with notes beneath, seven pen and pencil outline sketches of whales and dolphins, a pencil and wash drawing of a boat and net, a pen and wash sketch of barnacles &c in vol., a few manuscript leaves loosely inserted or tipped in including a pencil drawing of a stingray with ink notes beneath, uniform speckled calf gilt, some wear, joints weak with two covers detached and upper cover to vol. 1 missing, remains of spine labels present, 8vo. The majority of annotations are references taken from standard works, mostly c. 1780s-1830s, titles include Philosophical Transactions, Linnean Transactions, Gentleman's Magazine, Times, Monthly Review, etc.. Many are also taken from Pennant Manuscripts and a few from Latham's original observations, a few of these being initialled 'JL'. An interesting association copy. Latham lived at Romsey between 1796 and 1819 and in 1811 his revision of Pennant's British Zoology was published. This would seem to be Latham's copy of an earlier edition into which he made notes for the revised edition. However, a large number of the annotations with dated sources are from after 1811 and this information would not have appeared in that edition. In 1819 he was forced to sell a great part of his library and museum and moved to Winchester. These books must have survived that sale and remained with him at the time of his death in 1837. The Pennant manuscripts are held by the County Record Office, Warwickshire. Manuscripts and letters by Latham are held by the Natural History Museum and the Linnean Society. (6)

LATHAM, John (1740-1837). A General History of Birds. Winchester: for the Author [but London: Henry Bohn], 1821-28 [but circa 1845]. 11 volumes in 10 (index vol. bound in vol.I), 4° (270 x 215mm). Subscribers' list. 193 hand-coloured etched plates after and by Latham. (Occasional light browning.) Contemporary green half morocco gilt (slightly rubbed). Provenance: Robert Hamond Elwes (armorial bookplate). A VERY FINE SET OF THE REVISED AND EXPANDED SECOND EDITION, SECOND ISSUE, with the hand-coloured plates that are "like highly finished drawings". Describing this second issue in 1977 the late Charles Swann of Wheldon & Wesley Ltd. wrote "It would appear that only 25 copies of this edition were prepared". He does not cite his source(s), but what is certain is that Bohn set out to raise the quality of the plates. The work is listed in his catalogue of 1847 with a note: "This celebrated work was published at 25 guineas in boards, with the plates coloured in a very inferior manner. The present copies are all coloured like highly finished drawings, with studious accuracy, under the direction of several eminent ornithologists". The superior quality of the plates in this second issue is not recorded in the standard references. Brunet notes, of the second edition as a whole, that "Il y a un choix faire entre les exempl., qui ont plus ou moins bien enluminés", but does not recognise the two distinct issues. Lowndes records the Bohn reissue but makes no comment on plate quality. The later more specialised bibliographies fail to mention the later issue and its improved plates.
