Item Overview

Description

[Latham, John, 1740-1837]. British Zoology [by Thomas Pennant], 6 vols. (including 2 vols. Plates), Warrington, 1776-77, additional eng. title to each text vol., vol. 4 lacks general title, plt. contents leaves bound with plts. as two supplementary plt. vols., a total of 339 plts. including a few folding or hand-col., all apparently complete as listed in spite of a few anomalies such as plt. 16 to vol. 1 bound as part-title within text vol., the text vols. interleaved with blanks throughout (every third leaf) and heavily annotated with additional information, the majority seemingly in the hand of the naturalist John Latham whose ownership signature appears at the front of vol. 4 and second plt. vol. 'John Latham, Romsey', some additional pen and pencil marginalia to text leaves and some pencil notes to plts. (particularly crabs and shells), many of these notes again seemingly in Latham's hand but with some later additions and pasted in news cuttings, probably by the later owner R[ichard] L[onguet] Orlebar [1806-1870] of Hinwick House, Bedfordshire, whose ownership signature appears below that of John Latham in the final plate volume, additionally several sketches presumed by Latham, in vol. 3 a natterjack toad with notes beneath, seven pen and pencil outline sketches of whales and dolphins, a pencil and wash drawing of a boat and net, a pen and wash sketch of barnacles &c in vol., a few manuscript leaves loosely inserted or tipped in including a pencil drawing of a stingray with ink notes beneath, uniform speckled calf gilt, some wear, joints weak with two covers detached and upper cover to vol. 1 missing, remains of spine labels present, 8vo. The majority of annotations are references taken from standard works, mostly c. 1780s-1830s, titles include Philosophical Transactions, Linnean Transactions, Gentleman's Magazine, Times, Monthly Review, etc.. Many are also taken from Pennant Manuscripts and a few from Latham's original observations, a few of these being initialled 'JL'. An interesting association copy. Latham lived at Romsey between 1796 and 1819 and in 1811 his revision of Pennant's British Zoology was published. This would seem to be Latham's copy of an earlier edition into which he made notes for the revised edition. However, a large number of the annotations with dated sources are from after 1811 and this information would not have appeared in that edition. In 1819 he was forced to sell a great part of his library and museum and moved to Winchester. These books must have survived that sale and remained with him at the time of his death in 1837. The Pennant manuscripts are held by the County Record Office, Warwickshire. Manuscripts and letters by Latham are held by the Natural History Museum and the Linnean Society. (6)
