    (Cagli, 1706 - Roma, 1773) Maria Vergine Olio su tela, cm 45X34,5 Ricevuti i primi insegnamenti a Cagli, nel terzo decennio Lapis si trasferì a Roma. Nella Città Eterna frequentò la bottega di Sebastiano Conca, manifestando quanto prima un'autonomia di linguaggio, guardando al classicismo raffaellesco di Annibale Carracci e agli esempi di Maratti e Gaulli. La sua prima impresa sono gli affreschi ora distrutti sulla facciata della chiesa di San Bonaventura alla Polveriera e raffiguranti Episodi della Via Crucis, mentre nel 1732 dipinse la Gloria di Santa Chiara sulla volta della chiesa dedicata alla santa a Cagli. In quest'opera in cui, oltre a rivelare un deciso interessamento per le celebri composizioni barocche conservate nella capitale pontificia, Lapis si mostra debitore dei moduli compositivi adottati da Conca nella decorazione del soffitto della Basilica di Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, eseguita nel 1725 e alla quale forse prese parte in qualità di aiuto. La fortunata carriera dell'artista si registra con la sua nomina tra i Virtuosi del Pantheon e l'iscrizione all'Accademia di San Luca nel 1741. Sono anni questi, in cui il pittore conseguirà una rilevante maturità artistica consolidando il suo prestigio professionale, giungendo a esiti di raffinata perfezione formale, in sintonia con il rinnovato classicismo di Mengs e Winckelmann.     Armida restrained by Rinaldo oil on canvas 47 x 661/4 in. (119.4 x 168.2 cm.) NOTES This is a version of a painting of circa 1743 by Lapis, an eighteenth-century Roman artist who was trained by Sebastiano Conca and like his master was strongly influenced by Maratta. The prototype is part of a series of five paintings - the earliest major work by Lapis - depicting the story of Rinaldo and Armida, which derives from Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemma Liberta, in the Cassa di Risparmio, Pesaro.

    *Gaetano Lapis (1706-1758) MADONNA IN GLORY WITH SAINT CHRISTOPHER AND A MARTYRED BISHOP SAINT oil on canvas 25 1/2 by 14 1/2 in. 64.8 by 36.8cm. The present painting formed the left hand wing of a triptych that was probably made up in the 19th Century. Both the central and left hand portions of the triptych were sold in these rooms in the 1987 sale (see Provenance below).
