Item Overview

Description

Armida restrained by Rinaldo oil on canvas 47 x 661/4 in. (119.4 x 168.2 cm.) NOTES This is a version of a painting of circa 1743 by Lapis, an eighteenth-century Roman artist who was trained by Sebastiano Conca and like his master was strongly influenced by Maratta. The prototype is part of a series of five paintings - the earliest major work by Lapis - depicting the story of Rinaldo and Armida, which derives from Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemma Liberta, in the Cassa di Risparmio, Pesaro.
