    Voyages.- Langsdorff (Georg Heinrich von) Voyages and Travels in Various Parts of the World, 2 vol., first edition in English, engraved frontispiece portrait, 20 engraved plates only (of 21, lacking "A View of the Russian Settlement at Oonalashka" in vol. 2), folding chart, vol. 2 lacking A3 (contents f.), vol. 1 first and last few leaves reinforced at gutter, portrait & vol. 2 title with short marginal tear repaired, vol. 1 some plates with very faint and small ink-stamp to verso, a couple with short marginal tear or small chip without image loss, offsetting, spotting, mainly to vol. 1, some soiling or small staining, bound in green half morocco by Mudie, rebacked with original gilt backstrips with anchor motif laid down (slightly sunned), spines and extremities rubbed, t.e.g., [Hill 969; Sabin 38896], 4to, for Henry Colburn, 1813-14.  *** Langsdorff was physician and naturalist on board the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe under Krusenstern. He provides comprehensive accounts of Brazil, Japan and Hawaii, as well as a "fuller account of Sitka and the settlement of San Francisco than any other contemporary account" (Sabin).  Provenance: Jennie A.     Langsdorff, Georg Heinrich von Bemerkungen auf einer Reise um die Welt in den Jahren 1803 bis 1807 Francoforte, Friedrich Wilman, 1812. In 4°. 2 voll., uno di testo e uno di tavole diviso in 2 parti. Nella prima parte del volume di tavole un ritratto e 27 tavole incisi in rame incluso una carta di musica stampata recto e verso, nella seconda parte un ritratto e 16 (di 17) tavole incisi in rame, alcune carte staccate, fioriture, legatura coeva in chagrin rosso impresso a secco, autore, titolo e fregi in oro al dorso, tagli marmorizzati. Prima edizione. Contiene la prima veduta pubblicata di San Francisco. Si tratta di un un importante resoconto di uno degli scienziati al seguito del giro del mondo intrapreso dal comandante Krusenstern per lo Zar di Russia a bordo delle navi Nadeshda e Neva. Con il conte Rezanov, uno dei fondatori della Russian American Company e ambasciatore russo in Giappone, Langsdorff viaggiò fino a Hokkaido, e poi si diresse in Alaska e in California. Fece ritorno a San Pietroburgo via Jakutsk da Ochotsk, che descrisse in dettaglio nella sua opera. Russell. xiv, 158 pp. Illustrated with a folding map, facsimiles of original German and English edition title-pages, 2 portraits (of Langsdorff and Rezanov), and five plates from engravings in the original German edition of 1812. 10x6 1/2, linen-backed blue boards, paper spine label, edges untrimmed, jacket with paper spine label. No. 68 of 260 copies. Signed by Russell on the limitation-page. Langsdorff was a naturalist with Kruzenshtern on his voyage aroung the world. This volume reprints the California-related portion of his work, and includes a reproduction of the first published view of San Francisco, which was issued with the original German edition but not its English translation.
