CHOO KENG KWANG : Mother & Child - Crossing the River, 1965

Born in Singapore in 1931, the late Choo Keng Kwang is one of the country’s beloved first-generation artists. His iconic status led to his artworks being commissioned by royalty, dignitaries and governments. The Singapore government had commissioned his paintings as state gifts to foreign dignitaries, with his works presented to the late Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and China’s chairman, Mao Tse-Tung. This particular painting, though dark and departs from the artist’s vivid colours, exhibits a sense of calmness and love as the mother is seen crossing a river with her child strapped on close to her using a cloth, while carrying a bag of some kind on each hand.

Many of his artworks were displayed for sale at Hotel Singapore, known today as Singapore Hilton on Orchard Road. His pieces were mostly acquired by various bankers, local corporate collectors, business guests and expatriates who have stayed at the hotel. This masterpiece, in particular, was also one of his notable works displayed at Hotel Singapore and was later acquired as part of the collection of the Chase Manhattan Bank New York since 1964. However, it has made its way back to Kuala Lumpur carrying the inventory number on the verso of the painting.

This idyllic painting depicts exotic winter birds – with one perched inquisitively on a branch, while another flapping its wings. Choo Keng Kwang was the only son of a Teochew diamond trader. He was heavily criticised for his decision to enroll in art classes but it paid off, as he graduated with two certificates, one from Catholic High School and one from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Choo Keng Kwang’s subjects of birds from the early 80’s is extremely rare and very much sought after.

Choo Keng Kwang’s subjects of birds from the early 80’s are extremely rare and very much sought after. Rarer are ones painted on masonite board executed alongside his mentor, Lee Man Fong. Bathed in soothing colours to amplify the beautiful harmony in nature, depicted here are uncommonly sighted birds, the doves. This idyllic painting depicts these beautiful birds – five of them perched silently on branches or the nest. Choo Keng Kwang was the only son of a Teochew diamond trader. He was heavily criticised for his decision to enrol in art classes but it paid off, as he graduated with two certificates, one from Catholic High School and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. He then became a teacher and was made the principal of Sin Hua School. His paintings were presented to the late Egyptian president Sadat and China’s Chairman Mao Tse-Tung and have also adorned the late President Ong Teng Cheong’s official residence at Kheam Hock Road. Choo has held and participated in numerous solo and group art exhibitions in Singapore and abroad. His works have toured Southeast Asia, Japan, Europe and US. For instance, in November 1990, he became the first Singaporean artist to participate in a cultural exchange exhibition in Jakarta, Indonesia. In July 1993, he was invited to exhibit his paintings in Brunei to commemorate Sultan of Brunei’s 47th birthday. Choo is also a philanthropist, involving himself in community and charity work by donating the proceedings of his paintings to hospital and communities.

Choo is distinguished for his landscape or landmark paintings, by his travels around the world which resulted in a series of exceptional pieces between the 1960Õs and 1970Õs. He clearly illustrated his exposure to diverse cultures from his tours, including amazing Thailand, and was obviously enchanted by the magnificence of The Temple of Emerald. The 1961 Emerald Temple illustrates his impressionist art style and he does so successfully by bringing forth the templeÕs majestic aura. Choo still retains his signature exudation of a dreamy aesthetic, luring viewers to not only see but feel its extraordinary mystical beauty. Though his use of mainly green, yellow and brown hues create vague figures and forms of the templeÕs silhouette, yet, he still portrays a realistic atmosphere of the surrounding. His smear of greens as seen on the artwork features a tropical ambience that encloses the space. Combined with his immaculate ethereal quality and delicate brushwork, he undoubtedly did the emblem justice with his glorious Emerald Temple (1961) masterpiece.
