      Simmie Knox (b.1935 Maryland) Portrait of Young Boy Oil on Canvas, 1991. Simmie Lee Knox painted the official White House portrait of former US President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. He was the first black American artist to receive a presidential portrait commission. Canvas measures 30x24.5", gallery gilt frame with overall measurement of 37x31". Portrait in excellent condition, a couple of small chips to frame edge.

Property of a Potomac, Maryland Collector Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist, mid-1990s. Note: After experimenting for some years with various painting formats, in the early 1980sSimmie Knox turned his focus to portraiture: "I think that a good portrait is the most difficult thing for an artist to bring off successfully. Not only must you get an accurate likeness, but you must also create a good painting. Somehow you must convey a subject's character, spirit, and personality; and everything must communicate the dynamism of the subject." Knox has been described as "the unofficial portraitist for trailblazing African Americans", having painted Thurgood Marshall, Muhammad Ali, Eric Holder and Oprah Winfrey among others. The first African-American artist to receive a presidential portrait commission, he painted the official portraits of Bill and Hillary Clinton. Unveiled in 2004, they now hang in the East Wing of the White House.
