In 2004 Simmie Knox unveiled portraits of Bill and Hillary Clinton at the White House, becoming the first African-American artist to paint an official presidential portrait. Though he has worked as a portrait painter for years, he began his career painting abstract works, such as those in lots 739 and 740.
