Filippo Juvarra (1678 Messina - 1736 Madrid) Circle: A sala terrena and a cortile reggio Two drafts and a detailed sketch for a stage decoration, c. 1730, Pen drawing Technique: Pen drawing on Transparent paper Date: c. 1730 Description: On the left, a two-storey sala terrena opens through whose double arcades one enters the open air, while on the right, one looks into a stately portico adjoined by a spacious staircase. In the 18th century, both types of rooms were part of the standardised repertoire of operas staged at the time. The tightly cropped picture and the style of the drawing place the print in the circle of Filippo Juvarra. Juvarra, one of the most important architects of the late Italian Baroque, was particularly prominent at the beginning of his career in Rome as a theatre architect and scenographer in the renovation and new construction of private theatres, before he found a new sphere of activity as a royal architect under Victor Amadeus II in Turin from 1714. Filippo Juvarra (1678 Messina - 1736 Madrid) Circle: Garden loggia Design for a stage decoration, 18th century, Pen drawing Technique: Pen drawing on Transparent paper Date: 18th century Description: In the background of the loggia, which opens on all sides, you can see two tents. On the right, a side room leads to a staircase and on the left the royal palace adjoins. The cursorily drawn sketch is probably by the same hand as the previous sheet, although here the indication of light and shadow values and the associated differentiation of spatial-plastic volumes by hatching has been dispensed with. In this case, too, the almost intimate character of the architecture is characteristic of the draughtsman's conception of space. In 1704 he went to Rome, where he frequented the studio of Carlo Fontana. His first important work dates back to 1708, when he signed the Antimori chapel in San Gerolamo della Carità in Rome, also distinguishing himself as a set designer. But it was from 1714 that his activity intensified, in Messina and then in Piedmont, as the first architect of King Vittorio Amedeo II of Savoy. From 1714 his inspiration reshaped the Venaria Reale plant and in 1715 gave shape to the Basilica of Superga. In those years he created the facade of the church of Santa Cristina. He participates in the third enlargement of the city towards the West for which he conceives the Palazzo Martini in Cigala; the Military Quarters and the Carmine church. He also created the staircase and the facade of Palazzo Madama and the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi. In 1735 he was called to Spain by King Philip V, for whom he designed the Royal Palace, the Grandja di San Idelfonso and the Palace of Aranjuez. He died in Madrid in 1736. The work in question is rich in detailed drawings, alternating with architectural elevations; the structures are executed with extreme refinement, and in the handwriting of the artist (and, perhaps, of one of his collaborators) his ideas for realization or modification are recognizable. Note the notes for the Music Room, the Stables, and the sketch for the Garden of Malta
