      Est: €45,000 - €70,000

Juan Rodríguez Juárez (Mexico City, 1675 - 1728) "Pietà" Oil on copper. Circa 1702. 26,5 x 19,8 cm. Juan Rodríguez Juárez developed his art as a portraitist, and the precision of his drawing, the solidity of his figures and the treatment of his canvases are outstanding. The son of Antonio Rodríguez and grandson of José Juárez, a great exponent of the New Spanish Baroque, Juan Rodríguez Juárez began painting at a very young age and was a contemporary of Cristóbal de Villalpando. He studied with José de Padilla, with whom he worked in his studio. Together with his brother Nicolás, he was a precursor of the great change in themes, models and visual language that would serve as a bridge between the 17th and 18th centuries, and which would give rise to the first art academies in New Spain. In addition to being a great portraitist, he created numerous religious paintings. The National Museum of Art houses important artworks by him, including his Self-Portrait and The Virgin of Mount Carmel with Saint Teresa and Saint John of the Cross. In the latter work, an oil on canvas dating from 1708, Rodríguez Juárez exalts the two holy reformers of the Carmelite order: Saint Teresa of Avila, theologian of the Church and founder of the Discalced Carmelites, and Saint John of the Cross, theorist and poet, author of the famous Spiritual Canticle. The artwork he did for the Altar of the Kings in the Metropolitan Cathedral with the themes of The Assumption of the Virgin and The Adoration of the Kings are also remarkable. Focusing on the copper painting we have here, it is of extraordinary quality, both in the drawing and in the colouring of the chromatic palette selected, being in this respect very similar and comparable to the copper painting of the Burial of Christ currently on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Both compositions, which are derived from Flemish engravings, display the brilliant colour and vigorous modelling characteristic of the first phase of his career. They are undoubtedly by the same hand and, in fact, could be part of the same series as they share the same measurements. It is not only the artist's typical colour palette that they share, but also, the brushstrokes, the use of gold in brocades and haloes, the flesh tones and the anatomy used to define the human body are virtually identical in both works. JOSÉ DE IBARRA Guadalajara (1688) / Mexico City (1756) "Baptism of Christ in the Jordan"

      Est: €180,000 - €240,000

Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. José de Ibarra was, together with Juan Rodríguez Juárez (1675-1728), the most prominent painter in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. He cultivated different genres, especially portraiture and religious painting, a magnificent example being the large canvas shown here, which represents the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan. This splendid autograph work shows all the characteristics that define his style, such as: his fine sense of composition and symmetry, his chromatic palette of rhythmic tones and the careful study of the anatomy of his models. The canvas, due to its dimensions and its iconography, It must have been conceived for the decoration of a baptismal chapel of great relevance, since it perfectly captures the moment in which Jesus received the waters of baptism in the Jordan River from Saint John. Ibarra was inspired by the Gospel of Saint Mark (1, 7-11) which describes some details such as the fact that when Christ received the waters, the heavens tore open and the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, descended upon him. The painter adds to what is described in the sources the presence of angels who, with great delicacy, assist him by holding his clothes. Attributed to Juan Rodríguez Juárez (Mexico, 1675 - 1728)

      Est: €25,000 - €30,000

Attributed to Juan Rodríguez Juárez (Mexico, 1675 - 1728) "Saint Gregory the Great, inspired by the Holy Spirit, in 'sacra conversazione' with Saint Matthew" Oil on canvas. Relined. 165 x 106 cm. Saint Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church, to whom the title "doctor of the celestial militia" is given, said in his Moralia: "The existence of angels is attested almost on every page of Sacred Scripture," or "Go forth to meet him, angels of the Lord, to offer his soul in the presence of the Most High," which the Church sings in the office for the dead. In this mystical window or trompe l'oeil oval architecture, we find Saint Gregory with Saint Matthew, depicted with an angel listening to them or dictating to them. According to the patristic tradition, the angel is actually Matthew himself because he is the only one who speaks at the beginning of his Gospel about the Son of Man, the genealogy of Christ, and also about the Angel (the same one who appeared to Joseph), representing divine love, a Love sent by the angels (messengers of Christ) to humans. An "Angelical Doctrine" that inspired and moved them both, representing them as if they were two additional angels, intellectual beings superior to men, endowed by the Lord with special virtue and power. Juan Rodríguez Juárez belonged to a renowned family of painters in colonial Mexico. His artistic quality and the family's artistic importance earned him significant commissions from the aristocracy and high clergy of the viceroyalty. In this way, he coincided with the Archbishop of Mexico, José Pérez de Lanciego, who was brought to Mexico by King Philip V to ensure that secular clergy predominated over regular clergy in New Spain. There is evidence of Juan's close relationship with the aforementioned archbishop through various official portraits and commissions he received from areas in Latin America and others to be sent to the peninsula. This leads us to believe that, given the monumental nature of this painting, it may have been one of those commissions from the archbishop destined for Spain. It is also possible that it was part of a series of paintings representing the Doctors of the Church. Arts of the Spanish Americas

      Est: €13,000 - €14,000

JUAN RODRÍGUEZ JUÁREZ (Mexico, 1675-1728). "Education of the Virgin". Oil on copper. Presents a period frame. Provenance: private collection conceived from the 70's between London and Madrid. Measurements: 35 x 31 cm; 50,5 x 48 cm (frame). The Regional Museum of Guadalajara conserves in its collection a work by Juan Rodríguez Juárez dedicated to the Education of the Virgin. In both cases the work has a composition based on the representation of Saint Joachim, Saint Anne and the Child Virgin located in an interior that opens in the centre to a landscape. In this particular case the Virgin is shown younger and the relationship with her mother has been captured from a much more intimate perspective. The education of the Virgin is a theme that does not arise from Gospel literature but from the popular desire to emphasise the role of the mother's line in the human education of the Son of God, a desire that also made Saint Anne the patron saint of mothers. It is therefore a common and traditionally accepted theme, despite the fact that the Scriptures tell us that the infant Virgin was given to the temple for her upbringing. It is an iconography that appeared at the end of the Middle Ages and became popular from the 16th century onwards, with the book appearing from then on as an attribute of Saint Anne. This theme was the focus of intense discussion in intellectual circles in Seville during the Baroque period. As part of the Counter-Reformation doctrine, the Church dictated a series of rules to painters aimed at regulating the treatment of the most fundamental themes of Catholic doctrine so that they could be understood by the people. In particular, the Virgin became one of the most popular subjects among the Catholic faithful, as her immaculate conception was questioned by Protestants. Hence the proliferation in the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries of cycles of the Virgin's life, one of the scenes of which concerns her education. Although this theme aroused controversy among intellectuals because it cast doubt on Mary's perfection, it was very much to the taste of the people because of its human and realistic character. Juan Rodríguez Juárez was a member of a Spanish family that was long noted for its achievements in the world of painting. His brother Nicolás Rodríguez Juárez (1667 - 1734) was, like himself, a painter established in New Spain. He was the son of Antonio Rodríguez (1636-91), a notable Spanish painter. His maternal grandfather José Juárez (1617 - 1661) and his great-great-grandfather Luis Juárez (1585 - 1639) were also notable painters in Spanish history and prominent in the Baroque era. Juan Rodríguez Juárez, like many artists in New Spain during the late Baroque period, followed the trend of painting portraits of the local nobility. These works followed European models, with symbols of rank and titles shown detached on the exteriors or worked into another element of the paintings, such as draperies.
