    R. JORDAN (1810-1887), Traditional costumes of the island of Marche, Wood engraving

    Est: €45 - €75

Rudolf Jordan (1810 Berlin - 1887 Düsseldorf): Traditional costumes of the island of Marken (Buidersee), 19th century, Wood engraving Technique: Wood engraving on Paper Date: 19th century Description: R. Jordan depicts here in a homely situation, in a parlour, the traditional costumes of the island Marken - Buidersee in the Netherlands. This woodcut thus shows not only the traditional costumes, but also an interior of the time. What is irritating here is that the people seem to be of "simple" origin, but the furniture is partly of high quality. A very beautiful piece that gives an insight into long forgotten times. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Fashion, Netherlands, Size: Paper: 41,5 cm x 34,8 cm (16,3 x 13,7 in)

Rudolf Jordan, Fisher Families on the Coast

    Est: €12,000 - €15,000

Signed and dated lower right: Rudolf Jordan. Düsseldorf. 1853.Jordan received well-grounded artistic training at the Düsseldorf Academy as the master pupil of Wilhelm Schadow. He opened his own studio in the newly rebuilt Düsseldorf house of the estates in 1848, but later moved to another on Schadowstrasse. His visits to the coasts of Germany and Holland, the French North Sea and Channel coasts and Italy had a lasting influence on his oeuvre. He was named royal visiting professor (Titularprofessor) and was a member of the Academies of Berlin, Dresden, Brussels and Amsterdam. His works were exhibited in two world fairs and his pupils included Felix Schlesinger and Emil Schuback.Jordan is most well-known for his depictions of the perils faced by fishermen and sailors, as well as scenes of families. The present work is a fine example of this type and shows the anxious families waiting by the shore for the return of their loved ones. As they stare out to sea, their faces are marked by hopeful expectation combined with a measure of fear and doubt after the long wait.

    Est: €2,000 - €2,600

Oil on canvas, relined Germany, circa 1860 Wilhelm Rudolf Jordan (1810-1887) - German painter, watercolorist, illustrator and etcher Signed with the ligated monogram ‘RJ’ lower right Partly gilt wooden frame Dimensions: 65.5 x 85 cm Very good condition Expressive and stirring composition of the popular German painter Jordan. Currently the highest auction record for a similar painting by Jordan is more than €75,000 This is a typical painting by Wilhelm Rudolf Jordan (1810-1887), who painted with preference motifs on the North Sea coast, especially on Heligoland. He was inspired, amongst others, by Heinrich Heine's travel narrative ‘Die Nordsee’ (1826). The present romantic composition features a mediating girl seated on the shore of a stormy sea. In the background seem to appear the cliffs of Heligoland. The painting delights with the suggestive lighting and the concentrated power that exudes the figure of the girl. The painting bears the ligated monogram ‘RJ’ lower right. It is very well preserved and shows only minor losses of color. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered small areas of retouching in the background of the lower part and major areas of retouching to the sky. The frame is in very good condition. The painting measures 65.5 x 85 cm, the framed dimensions are 83 x 101 cm. Wilhelm Rudolf Jordan (1810-1887) Born in Berlin, the painter Wilhelm Rudolf Jordan (1810-1887) first trained at the school of painting under Karl Wilhelm Wach in Berlin and then attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He there worked in the studio of Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow and Karl Ferdinand Sohn. From 1848, he worked as a genre painter and opened his own studio in Düsseldorf. In 1837, Jordan was a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. He was appointed Royal Professor and won the large gold medal of the Berlin exhibition. Several works of Jordan were published during his lifetime in the form of engravings and lithographs. Jordan, Rudolf: Das Lotsenexamen

    Est: €700 - €900

Das Lotsenexamen. Radierung auf Velin. 17,3 x 23,2 cm. (1839). Andresen 197.

Rudolf Jordan, more renowned for his work of life by the North Sea coast, spent several months around 1877/87 in Italy. Only very few paintings of depict his life in Italy. Similar to his Northern German multi-figured genre pieces, the present work illustrates a busy, atmospheric scene in Rome Osteria. The tavern "La Serpentia" was a venue of the Rome-based German painters of the Düsseldorf School circle. German Text Jordan, Rudolf 1810 Berlin - 1887 Düsseldorf In der Osteria, genannt die Schlangenkneipe. Monogrammiert und datiert unten rechts: RJ (lig) 1878. Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 108 x 145cm. Rahmen. Provenienz: Privatsammlung NRW. Literatur: Bötticher, Friedrich von: Malerwerke des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts. Beitrag zur Kunstgeschichte. Erster Band, zweite Hälfte. Frankfurt 1969. S. 651ff.
