          Description: Oil on canvas. John C. Johansen, Landscape Painting (possibly near Monterey, Ca.), which the artist specialized in, signed lower right. Artist biography:John C. Johansen (1876-1964). Near Chicago.A painter who combined luminist, tonalist, and impressionist styles and specialized in landscapes, portraits, and interior scenes, John Johansen was born in Denmark and when he was one years old, arrived in Chicago with his parents.  He spent his career in the United States in Chicago, New York City and New Canaan, Connecticut the last twenty-nine years of his life.He studied in Ohio with Frank Duveneck and in Chicago at the Art Institute of Chicago with John Vanderpoel and Frederick Warren Freer. He went to Paris around 1898 and studied at the Academie Julian and at James Whistler's Academie Carmen. Returning to Chicago around 1905 and teaching at the Art Institute, he married M. Jean MacLane, a fellow student and skilled figure painter. They traveled abroad including Venice for two years before settling in New York City, where they each established a studio.He was active as a landscape painter particularly during his years in Chicago, specializing in Tonal evening scenes. A trip to Venice around 1905 resulted in a group of much-praised works. Later he became known as a portraitist, and he also created a widely exhibited series of industrial shipyard pictures during World War I. In 1919, he and his wife were commissioned by the National Art Committee to paint portraits of important international figures involved with the war. John Bross Lloyd lived outside Lee, Massachusetts in what was known as the John Bross Lloyd estate. When Queen Wilhelmina of Holland came to America for a few months in 1942 to escape the looming Nazi takeover of her country, she was a guest at the Lloyd Estate. President Roosevelt paid a visit to the Queen and her daughter Juliana and grand-daughters Irene and Beatrix (the current Queen of Holland). The Queen's visit has been immortalized in Katherine Paterson's children's book "Blueberries for the Queen" Exhibitions: Stockbridge Art Exhibition, Lee Massachusetts Other Notes: Johansen was known primarily for his portraits several are in the collection of the National Academy of Design, New York.
