Jeurat's genre paintings in the manner of David Teniers were exceedingly popular. He is even sometimes referred to as the French Teniers. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1733 and was made guardian of the Royal Painting Collection at Versailles in 1767. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes in the Louvre for the first time in 1737 and continued to do so until shortly before his death at the age of 90. The present pair of paintings were attributed to Jeurat by Cabinet Millet, Paris.

Il se fait remarquer en 1733 en tant que peintre d'histoire avec son morceau de réception à l'Académie royale de peinture, Pyrame et Thisbé. Il expose ensuite régulièrement au Salon du Louvre entre 1739 et 1769 et devient gardien du Cabinet du Roi à Versailles en 1767. Par cette charge et par sa carrière officielle, Etienne Jeaurat est amené à fréquenter la cour quotidiennement, ce qui le pousse peu à peu à se consacrer à la description des moeurs de ses contemporains. Il laisse ainsi une plus durable empreinte en tant que peintre de scène de genre, un genre pictural nouveau au XVIIIe siècle mis en valeur par des peintres comme Jean-Baptiste Siméon Chardin, qu'en tant que peintre d'histoire, genre le plus noble. Contrairement à ce dernier, artiste connu pour la description d'intérieurs modestes et de familles pieuses, Jeaurat choisit l'anecdote amusante et recherche ses modèles dans un milieu plus opulent. Il représente ici, avec un trait rapide et mordant, un courtisan faisant ses emplettes chez le perruquier. Ce dessin révèle un point de vue familier et humoristique sur une cour toute préoccupée d'apparences et de modes. Par ce regard piquant sur la société contemporaine, l'artiste signe des oeuvres qui rappellent les conversation pieces de William Hogarth à la même époque à Londres. With the wigmaker Pierre noire, white chalk highlights 23.5 x 20.5 cm Etienne Jeaurat is trained in the workshop of Nicolas Vleughels and stands out as his best pupil. His master introduced him to Italy, a necessary step in the training of any artist of the time. Thus, Jeaurat excelled in the official artistic path. In 1733, he is noticed as a history painter with his reception piece at the Royal Academy of Painting, Pyrame and Thisbé. He then exhibited regularly at the Salon du Louvre between 1739 and 1769 and became the guardian of the King's Cabinet in Versailles in 1767. Through this position and his official career, Etienne Jeaurat had to frequent the court on a daily basis, which gradually led him to devote himself to describing the customs of his contemporaries. He thus left a more lasting imprint as a genre painter, a new pictorial genre in the 18th century highlighted by painters such as Jean-Baptiste Siméon Chardin, than as a history painter, the noblest genre. Unlike the latter, an artist known for depicting modest interiors and pious families, Jeaurat chose the amusing anecdote and sought his models in a more opulent environment. Here he depicts, with a quick and biting stroke, a courtesan shopping at the wigmaker's shop. This drawing reveals a familiar and humorous point of view on a court who is preoccupied with appearances and fashions. With this sharp look at contemporary society, the artist creates works that recall the conversation pieces of William Hogarth at the same time in London.
