ABRAHAM BANISHING HAGAR AND ISHMAEL measurements note 252 by 194mm pen and brown ink and brown and grey wash, over red chalk, within black ink framing lines PROVENANCE Bernard Houthakker (L.1272); his sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby Mak van Waay, 17-18 November 1975, lot 183, reproduced (as Pieter Lastman) EXHIBITED Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, Oude Kunst, 1929, cat. no. 229 (as Pieter Lastman); Amsterdam, Bernard Houthakker, 1952, cat. no. 47, reproduced (as Pieter Lastman); Amsterdam, Rijksprentenkabinet, De Verzameling van Bernard Houthakker, 1964, cat. no. 50, reproduced pl. 10 (as Pieter Lastman) LITERATURE K. Bauch, 'Entwurf und Komposition bei Pieter Lastman,' Münchener Jahrbuch der bildenden Kunst, III, VI, 1955, p. 217; W. Sumowski, 'Zeichnungen von Lastman und aus dem Lastman-Kreis,' Giessener Beiträge zur Kunstgeschichte, vol. III, 1975, note 57; M. Schapelhouman, 'Tekeningen van Pieter Jansz., 'Konstig Glasschrijver'', in Bulletin van het Rijksmuseum, vol. 33, no. 2, 1985, p. 86, reproduced fig. 20 NOTE Though previously published as a drawing by Pieter Lastman, connected with that artist's painting of 1612 in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, this drawing is typical of the style of the rare Amsterdam glass-painter and draughtsman Pieter Janssen, as first described and analysed by Marijn Schapelhouman (op. cit., pp. 71-92). Lastman's painting must have been an important source of inspiration for Janssen, as the latter also made another related drawing, in reverse but otherwise similarly composed (also formerly in the Houthakker collection; sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 4 November 2003, lot 83).
