NOTE

Though previously published as a drawing by Pieter Lastman, connected with that artist's painting of 1612 in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, this drawing is typical of the style of the rare Amsterdam glass-painter and draughtsman Pieter Janssen, as first described and analysed by Marijn Schapelhouman (op. cit., pp. 71-92). Lastman's painting must have been an important source of inspiration for Janssen, as the latter also made another related drawing, in reverse but otherwise similarly composed (also formerly in the Houthakker collection; sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 4 November 2003, lot 83).
