Mitchell Jamieson Watercolor w/ Draper Dedication, 1946

        Est: $900 - $1,350

**Originally Listed At $500** Mitchell Jamieson (American, 1915-1976). Watercolor with inscription, 1946. Created as a gift to his friends, American artist William Draper and his wife Barbara, a watercolor painting by artist Mitchell Jamieson that depicts an individual tending to his cow. The setting is filled with verdant flora as well as a lean-to edifice with a staircase behind it . At the lower right is Jamieson's signature and dedication, "For Bill and Barbara with every good wish 2/7/46". The following year, Jamieson was awarded an Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and he received the coveted Guggenheim fellowship in 1946 as well as 1948. Size including board: 17.75" L x 23.125" W (45.1 cm x 58.7 cm) Jamieson was an American artist who traveled to the United States Virgin Islands and Key West to paint under the Treasury Department's Art Project during the 1930's. In addition, he was commissioned to paint numerous post office murals for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal. During World War II, both Jamieson and William Draper were combat artists in the U.S. Navy. Jamieson depicted the invasion of Sicily, the occupation of North Africa, and the invasion of Okinawa. Jamieson's artwork was collected by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the White House, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Seattle Art Museum, Brooklyn Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Jamieson had an illustrious career and was represented by the Franz Bader Gallery in Washington, D.C. where he exhibited numerous times from 1958 until he passed away in 1976. He also taught art at the University of Maryland for many years, beginning in 1959. Perhaps even more exciting, NASA commissioned Jamieson three times between 1963 and 1972 to depict Project Mercury Mission and Saturn launching at Cape Kennedy; the Lunar Spacecraft Recovery aboard U.S.S. Hornet; and the Apollo 17 Mission. Provenance: The William F. Draper Collection, New York City, USA, acquired via descent from the late William Franklin Draper (1912-2003), an accomplished American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Known as the "Dean of American Portraiture," William Draper was the only artist to paint President John F. Kennedy from life, and his oeuvre includes marvelous landscapes from his world travels, military paintings as he was one of only seventeen Combat Artists in WWII, and portraits of illustrious individuals.
