Top Cottage National Historic Site, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Dream House: A Retreat for the President at Hyde Park signed 'Mitchell Jamieson' (lower left) watercolor on paper 163/4 x 21 in. (42.5 x 53.4 cm.) PROVENANCE Franklin Delano Roosevelt, gift from the artist. Eleanor Roosevelt, acquired from the above. John A. Roosevelt, acquired from the above. NOTES Top Cottage National Historic Site is the hilltop retreat Franklin D. Roosevelt built for himself on his estate in 1938. He worked and entertained guests there including Winston Churchill, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. In fact, this is where the famous American Barbeque or Hot Dog Picnic was given for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on their official visit to Hyde Park in 1939. Mitchell Jamieson completed several commissions for President Roosevelt under the Federal Arts Program. The present work is one of three original watercolors from a set remaining on exhibition at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, Hyde Park, New York.
