      17th Century; Original, frame 31” x 27.25”, canvas 27.25” x 23.5”, this significant rediscovery is one of the famous series of historical portraits of Scottish kings commissioned by the council of Edinburgh as part of the display of pageantry to mark King Charles I’s entry into the city in 1633. George Jamesone was employed to paint the portraits of over 100 Scottish monarchs. This example is one of a group of 26 works that were sold from the collection of the marquee of Lothian at Newbattle Abbey in 1971. Mr. Costin who acquired much of his art and antiques form his friend Edger Boone of Wilson N.C. traveled to Scotland and attended the Dowells Auction at Newbattle Abbey. Originally, according to Duncan Thomson, the portraits were acquired circa 1720 by Robert Kerr first marquee of Lothian, and were preserved in the estate until 1971. In 1974 Duncan Thomson wrote the book The Life And Art Of George Jamesone where he attended the auction and described several of the paintings in detail. In his book, he describes this portrait of Edgar, “head and shoulders, in profile to the right; face rather pale, fair moustache and dark brown hair. Wears ermine partlet with red top border studded with blue jewels; ‘doublet’ green to olive green, with prominent highlights on sleeve.” Mr. Costin not only preserved these paintings, he also kept the original auction catalog, which we can provide a copy to the winning bidder. Largely, undamaged and not repainted, this gives the clearest idea of what the less ‘finished’ group of the series must originally have looked like.” Not only did Mr. Thomson describe this lot, it is also pictured in his book.
