Notes

The present painting relates closely to Jamesone's portrait of Hope which is in a private collection and currently on loan to the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. Hope was knighted in 1673 when he became an ordinary lord of session, by virtue of which office he took the title of Lord Craighall. A supporter of the National Covenant, he went on to join the Cromwellian administration in Scotland, reputedly stating that Charles II ought 'to treat with Cromwell for the one halff of his cloake before he lost the whole'.
