TO GILBERT JACKSON (BRITISH, FL. 1622-1640), OIL ON CANVAS, H 28", W 23", PORTRAIT OF FRANCIS RUSSELL, 4TH EARL OF BEDFORD:Portrait of a man identified as Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford, half-length, in a feigned oval, dressed in a lace-trimmed black doublet, bearing family crest to upper left and inscription to the upper right: "Francis Russell 4th. Earl of Bedford 1593 - 1641, Earl of Bedford who died of the small pox in 1641 at Bradford House in the Strand May 9, 1641. Family lore considered Francis Russell a man who 'lived in advance of his time altogether', or so one of the Russells' nineteenth-century stewards claimed. The fourth Earl's energy and acumen - '-manifested in his rebuilding of Woburn Abbey and his scheme for draining the Fens, as well as in the development of Covent Garden - was the foundation on which the future Russells' successes was built. - "The Bedford Estate: From 1627 to 1641."
