A SCROLL PAINTING OF A MONK AND CHILDREN, AFTER HANABUSA ITCHO, c. 1900s After Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724) Japan, late 19th to early 20th century Ink, watercolors, and gouache on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade frame with wooden handles. Depicting two boys gleefully reaching for the black cat in a travelling monk’s hand. The monk with an oi backpack and straw hat strewn to his back. Inscriptions: Signed ‘Hanabusa Itcho’ 英一蝶 with seal. Image SIZE 98.5 x 37.5 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 186 x 50 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and slight browning of paper. Few creases, miniscule losses, and minor stains. Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724) was a Japanese painter born in Osaka, calligrapher, and haiku poet. He originally trained in the Kano style, under Kanō Yasunobu, but ultimately rejected that style and became a literati (bunjin).

HANABUSA ITCHO (1652-1724): 'JUROJIN PEERING THROUGH A TELESCOPE' Japan, 18th century. Ink, watercolors, and gouache on silk. Mounted as a hanging scroll, on a silk brocade coated paper frame with red lacquered wooden handles. Depicting the God of Longevity with his companion deer and a small child in tow, the deity peering through a telescope above clouds looking at the constellation of the Southern Pole Star. Inscriptions: To the bottom-right, signed 'Hanabusa Itcho sho' ('Painted by Hanabusa Itcho'). One seal, 'Shuzai san'un senseki kan' 趣在山雲泉石間 ('Pleasure in roaming in the mountains, clouds, springs, and stones'). Provenance: French private collection. Condition: Very good condition with wear, minor stains, and some creasing. The brocade frame with expected wear, few losses, and traces of age. Dimensions: Image size 85 x 35.7 cm, Size incl. mounting 163.5 x 39 cm Jurojin is said to be a personification of the Southern Pole Star (Nankyokusei). While he normally stands with his staff, here, he is humorously depicted looking through a telescope. Hanabusa Itchō (1652-1724) was a Japanese painter, calligrapher, and haiku poet. He originally trained in the Kanō style, under Kanō Yasunobu, but ultimately rejected that style and became a literato (bunjin). He was also known as Hishikawa Waō and by several other names. Born in Osaka as son of a physician, he learned painting from Kano Yasunobu, then went his own way. Because his depictions were largely devoted to scenes from life in Edo (Tokyo), also Yoshiwara, one terms his style as “between Kano and jukiyo-e“. He became famous through his forced exile after he painted the concubine of the Shogun in burlesque manner. So he spent more than 10 years on the island of Miyake Shima. His works there (particularly costly) were signed by “the island Itcho“, Shima Itcho. The four drawings each show a figurative depiction - each with admirable, precise brushwork. All are irregularly cut and mounted (see below about the collector). SIZES AROUND 10 TO 20 CM From the collection of the medical eye specialist and politician Émile Javal, 1839 - 1907. He was a parlament member, friend of Zola and wrote the decisive expertise in the 2nd trial against Dreyfuss. Javal was an officer of the Legion of Honour and had five children.

HANABUSA ITCHO (1652-1724) TENGU (MOUNTAIN GOBLINS) Edo period (1615-1868), c. 1700 Hanging scroll, ink and color on paper, depicting Ushiwakamaru (the young Yoshitsune) in the guise of a tengu and wearing a yamabushi (mountain monk) cap, assailing the real tengu of Mount Kurama in the branches of an enormous pine tree, observed by their king Sojobo who watches him from behind a fan, two junior tengu falling to the ground at the bottom of the scroll, inscribed with a poem and signed Fuji Nobuka ga, with one seal of the artist 35 x 12 1/2in (88.9 x 31.8cm) At the very beginning of his military career, the charismatic, ill-fated hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159-1189) was sent, aged six, to a Buddhist temple in Kurama, a mountainous region north of Kyoto, where he resisted monastic discipline and would frequently escape to receive instruction from Sojobo, the great tengu of Kurama, in the martial skills that would enable him to destroy his family’s archenemy, the Taira clan. The tengu, monstrous creatures with crow-like beaks, are thought to have been inspired by the masks worn at ceremonies practiced in mountain temples by monks of the Shugendo sect, known as yamabushi. After completing his training at Kurama, Yoshitsune left the mountain in secret to fulfill his tragic destiny. The other disguised figure in this painting, depicted below the two tengu attacked by Yoshitsune, is perhaps the warrior-monk Benkei who would become the hero’s faithful companion, even though he normally enters the narrative after Yoshitsune’s return to Kyoto. The story of Yoshitsune, for much of his career an outcast from conventional society, was an ideal subject for the artist’s eleven years on the island of Miyake, where he was exiled as a punishment for lampooning the shogun’s concubine; it was not in fact until his return to Edo that he started using the name Itcho by which he is generally known today. Ink and color on paper. Japan, 17th to early 18th cent. From the collection of Émile Javal, French physician and politician. Itcho was an important calligrapher, painter and poet in Japan, a many-talented allrounder. He was born in Osaka as son of a doctor. As a painter, he met Kano Yasunobu, then each followed their own paths. Because he dedicated many depictions to scenes from life in Edo (Tokyo), also of Yoshiwara, his style was termed as “between Kano and Ukiyo-e“. Also his banishment was famous after he painted a concubine of the Shogun in a burlesque version. Thus he spent more than 10 years on the island Miyake Shima. There he signed his (especially expensive) works with “the Island-Itcho“, Shima Itcho. The four drawings show respectively a figurative depiction – each with admirable precise strokes. All are cut irregularly and mounted (see below about the collector). The depictions are: 1. Man with unkempt hair and fan, presumably a theater scene 2. Woman with tall black eboshi on her head, courtly robes 3. The witch Hannya with horns, wild gesticulations and the well-known mallet 4. Old man with fishing rod, presumably Urashima Taro. The leaves themselves are in average good condition. They come from the collection of the eye specialist and politician Émile Javal, 1839 - 1907. He was a delegate, friend of Zola and wrote the decisive expert assessment in the 2nd Dreyfus trial. Javal was an officer in the Legion of Honour and had five children. Einer der wichtigsten eigenständigen Künstlerpersönlichkeiten der Zeit. Zunächst in der Kano-Schule bei Yasunobu ausgebildet geht er bald eigene Wege und wendet seine Aufmerksamkeit zunehmend auch den Sitten und der einfachen Lebensweise der Bevölkerungsmehrheit zu. Das Motiv, gleichwohl Metapher für den Kreislauf des Lebens, wie für Rüstigkeit und Gesundheit im Alter, ist in einer technischen Selbstverständlichkeit ausgeführt, die wir für Hanabusa als einen der wichtigsten Maler der Tokugawa-Zeit annehmen dürfen. Dabei offenbart sich in der geschickten, unauffälligen aber sehr wirkungsvollen Abstufung der Lavierung über die gesamte Bildfläche die hervorragende technische Ausbildung der Kano-Studios. Die mehr detailverliebte, realistischere Schilderung dokumentiert gleichzeitig Itcho's Weg außerhalb des oft strengen, formalen Konzepts der Kano-Malerei. Montierung des 19. Jh. in gutem Zustand mit einigen kaum störenden Bleichflecken. Das Papierbild weist einige Restaurierungen auf. Anm.: Hanabusa Itcho war gebürtig aus Osaka und auch als Dichter begabt. Im Jahr 1698 soll er den Zorn des Shogunats erregt haben und wurde jahrelang auf Miyakejima verbannt, einer kleinen vulkanischen Insel weiter südlich der Halbinsel Izu. 1709 durfte er wieder nach Edo zurück, erst ab dieser Zeit nahm er den angeführten Namen an. In der Signatur fällt auf, daß Sanjin "Vertriebener" bedeuten kann ...

HANABUSA ITCHO (1652 - 1724): THREE MEN UNDER A PINE Kakemono, ink on paper, North-Thailand, 2nd half 18th century A kakemono offering a vivid figurative painting of a humorous study depicting three men under a pine tree. They are wearing black caps and have put their working tools aside to relax and maybe enjoy some Sake. Itcho ambitiously grasped their expression and thus let us participate in this amusing moment. The pine tree masterly done with a few strokes. Seal: Hokuso in ?? ? (Seal of H.) first character illegible. Hokuso is the artist's name of Hanabusa Itcho (?? ?) from Osaka. Itch studied at the Kano-School (to be seen from his distinctive style), and then worked independently and especially favored popular themes. Mounted on silk with Ichimonji of a fine bronze shade, ivory Jikusaki, backed sections. Eine lebendige, mit humorvoller Facette versehene kleinere Kakemono-Studie, die drei Männer wiedergibt, die es sich unter einer Kiefer sehr gemütlich gemacht haben und sich von ihrer Arbeit ausruhen. Anders gesagt faulenzen sie, der Künstler hat sie dabei "erwischt" und für immer festgehalten, jedenfalls besser als jede Fotografie. Ihre leicht feisten Gesichter schmunzeln glückselig beim Dösen, es sieht so aus, als hätten sie sich mehr oder weniger Sake einverleibt ... Sie tragen schwarze Kappen und haben ihr Arbeitsgerät (Rechen und Besen) abgestellt. Die Kiefer ist mit meisterlichem Duktus in knappen Strichen gezeichnet. Das rote Siegel lautet Hokuso in ?? ? (Siegel des H.), das Zeichen vor dem ersten (Hoku) ist nicht zu lesen. Hokuso ist ein Künstlername des aus Osaka stammenden Hanabusa Itcho (?? ?). Itcho lernte in der Kano-Schule (was an seinem Stil sogleich zu sehen ist), machte sich aber wieder selbständig und entwickelte eine besondere Vorliebe für Themen aus dem Volksleben. Seidenmontierung mit Ichimonji, die einen schönen bronzefarbenen Ton haben, sowie elfenbeinerne Jikusaki. Hinterklebte Stellen. Arbeit ausruhen.
