He exhibited regularly at the Bewick Club and the Royal Academy (1898-1906). He continued his studies in 1905 at the Académie Julian in Paris. One of his best known paintings is ‘The Blaydon Rayce’, which today is on display at the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead.

      Oil and remnants of gold leaf on canvas England, c. 1926 William Irving (1866-1943) - English portrait, landscape and genre painter Signed and dated ‘William Irving 192’ rechts unten Dimensions: 182.5 x 205 cm Mounted in gilt framework of battens: 189 x 205 cm Provenance: Heritage of Thomas Wilson; private collection, Austria Arcadian scene with the portraits of the son and the three daughters of Thomas Wilson with Greek temple, rainbow and apple blossoms The painting was commissioned by Thomas Wilson in 1926. Wilson was the proprietor and director of the Smart's College, Newcastle upon Tyne. The painting was hung in the Coxlodge Hall of the college, in the former residence of Sir Roland Hodge. According to the family’s tradition, the lamb in the foreground represents Wilson, and the sheep his wife Frances Wilson. Condition: The canvas is somewhat wavy and thinned. The painting shows fresh colors and minor craquelure. The ornamental border area shows a complete loss of the gilding (due to restoration?); there are still visible minimal residues. The inspection under UV light reveals several touch-ups between the figures to the center right. The frame comes with slight traces of use. The dimensions are 205 x 182.5 cm, while the frame measures 189 x 205 cm.       Arkadische Landschaft mit den Kindern des Reverend Thomas Wilson vor blühenden Apfelbäumen. Öl auf Leinwand. 182 x 204 cm. Unten rechts signiert und datiert "William Irving 192". William Irving, der an der Newcastle School of Art bei William Cosens Way studierte, reüssierte zunächst als Portraitmaler. Als Mitglied des Bewick Clubs zeigte er später Landschaften, die er dann auch auf den Ausstellungen der Royal Academy in London von 1898-1906 präsentierte. 1905 begab sich Irving nach Paris und schrieb sich an der Académie Julian ein, bevor er in seine Heimat im Nordosten Englands zurückkehrte. Bei dem vorliegenden Bild handelt es sich um eines von zwei Werken, die der Reverend Thomas Wilson im Jahr 1926 bei William Irving in Auftrag gegeben hatte. Thomas Wilson, Rektor der Smarts Colleges in Newcastle upon Tyne, ließ beide Gemälde in Coxlodge Hall aufhängen, einem Landhaus, das damals als ein Gebäude zu dem Collegekomplex gehörte.
