      ANGELO IPPOLITO The Point.

      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

ANGELO IPPOLITO The Point. Oil on canvas, 1957. 510x610 mm; 20¼x24 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower center recto. Provenance: Bertha Schaefer Gallery, New York, with the label; private collection, New York, thence by descent to the current owners, private collection, Connecticut. Ippolito (1922-2001) was an American painter best known for his abstract and color field work. Born in Italy, he emigrated with his family to New York at the age of nine. After serving in the Philippines during World War II, he studied with Amédée Ozenfant and John Ferren in New York and Afro in Rome. Ippolito had his inaugural exhibition at Bertha Schaefer Gallery, New York, in 1956. The art critic Robert Rosenblum commented that Ippolito's, "Canvases present abstract analogies to a landscape vision, suggesting earth, horizon line and sky; yet the separate realms of land and air are most often fused together in a single coloristic unity." Ippolito was an early and ardent practitioner of abstract expressionist work during the 1950s and 1960s, exhibiting frequently at the Shaefer Galler and Grace Borgenicht Gallery, New York, among others, while during the 1970s and later in his career, his work took on a sharper-edged, geometric, color field style.
