Dort studierte er Bildhauerei und Malerei. Ab 1880 studierte er an der Berliner Kunstakademie bei den Professoren Otto Knille und Fritz Schaper. Darüber hinaus war er Mitglied der bedeutenden deutschen Malerkolonie Willingshausen in der Schwalm sowie der Gutacher Malerkolonie im Schwarzwald. 1888 war seine Ausbildung abgeschlossen. Er wechselte seinen Wohnsitz nach Heidelberg, wo er Aquarelle, Ölgemälde und Zeichnungen Heidelberger/ Bergsträßer/ Odenwälder Landschaften und Gebäude anfertigte, die auch als Reproduktionen (Postkarten) vertrieben wurden

Text in German. LOT NOTES Heinrich Hoffman was born in 1859 in Kassel, Germany. He is known for townscape, figure and genre painting. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Hoffmann, Heinrich Porträt Erich Mühsam. Original-Photographie. Vintage. Silbergelatine. (München, 1919). 13,5 x 9,5 cm. Dazu 12 weitere Original-Photographien der Zeit, teils auch von Hoffmann. Verso mit Atelier-Stempel und montiertem Textzettelchen mit Mühsams Namen. Sehr bekannte Porträtaufnahme des Autors, Apothekers und Anarchisten, zugleich schöner Bildbeleg für Hoffmanns Wirken vor Schicklgruber. Unter der Bildnummer "hoff-2864" ist ein Abzug (allerdings gegenüber unserem Abzug beschnitten) im Hoffmann-Bildarchiv der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek dokumentiert. Wer ein authentischeres Porträt Mühsams aus der Zeit sehen möchte, sei auf Roda-Rodas Schlüsselroman "Schwabylon" (1921) verwiesen, dessen Deckelillustration, von Rolf Hoerschelmann gestaltet, einen zerzausteren Mühsam zeigt (und hinten "Hoersch" selber mit umstürzender Staffelei). Von den beigegebenen Photos (Formate bis 11,5 x 18 cm) sind 5 ebenfalls von Hoffmann und entsprechend gestempelt (Porträt Ludwig Thoma, Graf Zeppelin 1925 bei der Eröffnung des Deutschen Museums, König Ludwig im Felde um 1916 u.a.). Fünf weitere Photos stammen vom Münchner Bilderdienst Kester und Co. (Hindenburg, Ludwig Thoma, Prinz Rupprecht), zwei weitere Fotos sind ungestempelt (u.a. Ludendorff beim Hitler-Prozess 1923). - Teils gering bestoßen, vereinzelt verso Spuren alter Montage, insgesamt gut.

Hoffmann, Heinrich Carl Benz beim historischen Korso in München, 12. Juli 1925. Fünf Original-Photographien. Vintages. Silbergelatine. Formate 8,5 x 13,5 cm bis 11,5 x 16,5 cm. Der Schnauferl-Klub veranstaltete zu seinem 25jährigen Bestehen einen Korso historischer Wagen. Auch Benz nahm daran teil, u.a. am Steuer seines ersten Wagens. Die großformatige Aufnahme dazu stammt von Heinrich Hoffmann und ist verso entsprechend gestempelt, ein etwas kleinerer Abzug desselben Motivs ist unbezeichnet. Im Hoffmann-Archiv an der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek ist diese Aufnahme nicht nachgewiesen ! Die anderen drei Motive sind verso nur mit Bildnummer gestempelt, sonst unbezeichnet, dürften aber auch von Hoffmann sein, da sich ein Hoffmann-Abzug einer anderen Aufnahme des Korso, mit ganz ähnlicher, einkopierter handschriftlicher Legende wie hier, unter der Bildnummer "hoff-5796" im Hoffmann-Archiv der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek befindet. - Abzüge teils leicht gewellt, gering bestoßen und fleckig, insgesamt gut.
