HOEFNAGEL, Joris (1542-1601). Antverpia. Engraved map. Cologne: Braun & Hogenberg, 1572-1618 (1598). 19 3/4" x 32" sheet. A magnificent, double-sheet, bird's-eye plan of Antwerp at the zenith of its prosperity as the major trading center of Flanders. The view offers a fascinating glimpse of 16th century fortification principles, showing the bastions, armaments, arsenal and citadel with incredible detail. Within impressive town walls the city is animated with populated streets, lush gardens, and bustling docks. The vast cathedral dominates the center of the city. This plan was drawn by native-son Georg Hoefnagel and first published in volume V of Braun and Hogenberg's monumental Civitates Orbis Terrarum.

The almost scientific naturalism of his botanical and animal drawings as seen in the present lot, served as a model for a later generation of Dutch artists.

16th Century Map Entitled "Sevilla" from the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" by Braun & Hogenbergby

        Est: $500 - $1,000

Rare Stunning 16th Century Hand Colored Engraved Map created by Georg (Joris) Hoefnagel (Flemish 1542-1600) Entitled "Sevilla" 1588, copperplate engraving with hand coloring | Published by Braun & Hogenberg, Cologne, 1588-1617 | From volume 4 of George Braun & Frans Hogenberg, Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cologne: Gottfried von Kempen, ca. 1588) | Measures 27 1/2" x 23 1/2" | Very Good Condition: Minor foxing to paper, wear along crease. Civitates Orbis Terrarum: Between 1572 and 1617 Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) published the Civitates Orbis Terrarum: in six volumes, containing about 530 maps of mostly European cities. Georg Braun was the editor of this series, and Frans Hogenberg was the most important engraver. They relied mainly on existing maps, but also on maps made by drawings made by the Antwerp artist Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1600), who had travelled through most of Western Europe. After Joris Hoefnagel's death his son Jakob continued the work for the Civitates. Georg Braun (also Brunus, Bruin; 1541 – 10 March 1622) was a topo-geographer.[1] From 1572 to 1617 he edited the Civitates orbis terrarum, which contains 546 prospects, bird's-eye views and maps of cities from all around the world.[2] He was the principal editor of the work, he acquired the tables, hired the artists, and wrote the texts. He died as an octogenarian in 1622, as the only survivor of the original team to witness the publication of volume VI in 1617. Frans Hogenberg (1535–1590) was a Flemish and German painter, engraver, and mapmaker. Hogenberg was born in Mechelen as the son of Nicolaas Hogenberg.[1] In 1568 he was banned from Antwerp by the Duke of Alva and travelled to London, where he stayed a few years before emigrating to Cologne.[1] He is known for portraits and topographical views as well as historical allegories. He also produced scenes of contemporary historical events.
