          William Hodges RA (1744-1797)

          Est: £3,000 - £5,000

William Hodges RA (1744-1797) An extensive landscape with figures on a track and distant buildings beyond, probably Yorkshire oil on canvas 81 x 87.5cm Provenance: Private collection, Launceston Place, London, W8 The present picture, a significant new addition to the oeuvre of William Hodges, is likely to have been executed in the 1790s following the artist’s return from India. In 1793, Hodges visited Yorkshire and was commissioned by Walter Ramsden Fawkes of Farnley Hall to execute four oil paintings “about the size of half-lengths” based on sketches Hodges made of the Farnley’s environs (Isabel Combs Stuebe, The Life and Works of William Hodges, 1979, p. 297-298). It is possible that this picture is one of these hitherto untraced works, which were not well received by Fawkes, or another composition deriving from the same trip. In October 1793, Joseph Farington recorded in his diary that Hodges had also visited Fountains Abbey which he “very much admired, and stayed a day there” (ibid). Hodges subsequently exhibited views of Fountains and Kirkstall Abbey at the Royal Academy in 1794 (Nos. 371 and 375). A contemporary newspaper reported more favourably that: “Hodges has been painting St. Fontaines’ [sic] Abbey, and some other beautiful scenery of Yorkshire, in size-colours, and for brilliancy and effect, as well as graceful imitation, they have much to boast of” (ibid). We are grateful to Charles Greig for endorsing the attribution to William Hodges following first hand inspection. Framed 96 x 102cm. Remnants of Christie's stencil verso.

          Captain Cook - Tynai-Mai

          Est: $200 - $400

First edition print from Cook's second voyage on which he was directed to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible to search for any southern continent. William Hodges (1744 - 1797) joined Cook's second expedition to the South Pacific as a draughtsman 1772-75 and was employed by the Admiralty in finishing his drawings. His drawings were likely completed in the Society Islands during late August and mid-September 1773. It was in the Society Islands that the most cordial relations were established with local inhabitants, and it was here that Hodges was able to produce a fine series of portraits of Tahitians, several of whom were well-known personalities to members of Cook's company. This included Tynai Mai, a young beauty who was much admired and who danced for Cook's company in Raiatea. Tynai Mai was the daughter of Orio, chief of Raiatea. She is described in Hawkesworth's account: 'Mr Hodges took the opportunity of drawing a sketch of her portrait, which her vivacity and restless disposition rendered almost impossible.' G. Forster (10 September 1773) 'on their heads they had a high twist or turbant of plaited hair; on the crown in the circle between ye plaited hair all was filled with Cape Jasmin flowers & the front of the bunch of plaited hair was ornamented with 3 or 4 rows of the white flowers of the Morinda citrifolia, which looked so pretty as if the head had been set of by pearls'. This fascinating, first edition folio engraving is from Captain James Cook & James King's A Voyage towards the South Pole, and Round the World. Performed in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Adventure, In the years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. In which is included Captain Furneaux's Narrative of his Proceedings in the Adventure during the Separation of the Ships. The work was published in London by Strahan and Cadell in 1777. It is the official account of Cook's second voyage on which he was directed to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible to search for any southern continent. "The famous accounts of Captain Cook's three voyages form the basis for any collection of Pacific books. In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors had done together. He was really the first scientific navigator and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge." (Hill) "Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilization and by the foundation of British Australia. The world was given for the first time an essentially complete knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and Australia, and Cook proved once and for all that there was no great southern continent, as had always been believed. He also suggested the existence of antarctic land in the southern ice ring, a fact which was not proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century." (Printing and the Mind of Man p.135) "The success of Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition, which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents ... the men of this expedition became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Further visits were made to New Zealand, and on two great sweeps Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, and a number of smaller islands. Rounding Cape Horn, on the last part of the voyage, Cook discovered and charted South Georgia, after which he called at Cape Town, St. Helena and Ascension, and the Azores ... This voyage produced a vast amount of information concerning the Pacific peoples and islands, proved the value of the chronometer as an aid to finding longitude, and improved techniques for preventing scurvy." (Hill p.123)

HODGES, William (1744-1797). Early issues of the engraved plates to accompany the narrative of Cook's Second Voyage. London: 1776-1777. Extremely rare – perhaps unique – bound collection of early versions and proofs of the illustrations used in the narrative of Cooks' Second Voyage, printed on large, thick paper, with extremely wide margins. The prints include all of the portraits and all bar three of the views found in the 2 volume text. None of the images bear plate numbers; 22 plates carry earlier imprints of 'July 16 1776' than those found in the published book (1777). One plate, 'A View in the Island of Rotterdam' is a proof before letters and numbers, without caption title, and with only 'Drawn from nature by W. Hodges' and 'Engraved by W. Byrne' appearing beneath the image. Another, 'Ice Islands', is without the date 'the 9th of Jany. 1773' in the caption, and carries the earlier imprint. The 11 plates that appear to be in the same state as those in the published volumes tend to have darker, finer impressions than those found in the book, a good example being the portrait of Omai. Comparisons with 2 very similar sets held by the Dixson Library, Library of New South Wales (Beddie 1404 and 1405) showing some striking similarities with size, format and styles matching the present set, and both have the uncompleted caption to the 'Ice Islands' plate as in the present lot. Beddie 1405 notes that Dixson F77/3 is 'Reputed to be one of six sets for persons connected with the Admiralty', and it is possible that the current set was made up for that purpose. The views not present are plates LIV 'The landing of Middleburgh one of the Friendly Isles', LXIII 'The Landing at Erramanga one of the New Hebrides' and LIX, 'The Landing at Tanna one of the New Hebrides', which also happen to be the only plates after Hodges executed by Sherwin. Oblong folio (452 x 620mm). 34 engraved plates (i.e. all the portraits and all but 3 of the views [see above note] included in the official published account, see lots 5 and 6, the last 10 plates with variable dampstaining in lower margin but affecting images, a few faint insignificant creases). Modern half calf, antique style, retaining original green morocco spine label gilt lettered 'Cook's Prints' (extremities faintly rubbed). Provenance: Captain A.F.W. Fuller (no sign of provenance, but stated thus as item 43 in the Hordern House catalogue of the Robert and Mary Anne Parks Collection, 2011).

Two portraits from his time in Tonga, both in red chalk, are known. This portrait is of Otago (Ataongo) son of one of the leading chieftains of Tonga, and who was a constant companion of Cook during his visit to the island. This fascinating, first edition folio engraving is from Captain James Cook & James King's A Voyage towards the South Pole, and Round the World. Performed in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Adventure, In the years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. (Printing and the Mind of Man p.135) "The success of Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition, which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents ... the men of this expedition became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle.

HODGES, William (1744–1797). Choix de vues de l’Inde, dessinées sur les lieux, pendant les années 1780, 1781, 1782 et 1783. Londres : [Joseph Cooper], 1785-1788. Abbey, Travel, 416 ; Brunet, II, 242. Stuebe Isabel, “Willam Hodges and Warren Hastings: A study in eighteenth-century patronage.” }PROVENANCE : Thomas Parry (ex-libris).
