§ ANTHONY HILL (BRITISH, 1930-2020) ANTHONY HILL (BRITISH, 1930-2020) Low Relief signed 'Anthony Hill' (verso) melamine with relief 29.5 x 59.7 cm. (11 1/2 x 23 1/2 in.) Provenance With Laurent Delaye Gallery, London Sale; Bonhams, London, 1 July 2020, lot 69 Anthony Hill was a British artist associated with the Op Art movement. Born in London, Hill initially trained as an engineer before pursuing a career in art. He became known for his geometric abstract artworks, characterized by precise lines, shapes, and carefully calculated compositions. Hill was interested in exploring visual perception and optical illusions through his art. He employed various techniques such as contrasting colours, patterns, and rhythmic arrangements to create the illusion of movement and depth on a two-dimensional surface. His works often involved repeated geometric forms, creating a sense of vibration or pulsation when viewed. During the 1960s, Hill was one of the leading figures of Op Art in Britain. Op Art, short for "Optical Art," was an art movement that emerged in the 1960s and focused on creating optical effects through abstract patterns and visual illusions. Artists associated with Op Art sought to engage viewers' perception and create a sense of visual instability or dynamism. Hill's artworks were exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the UK and internationally. He was also involved in the Systems Group, a collective of artists exploring mathematical and systematic approaches to art. Anthony Hill's contributions to Op Art and his exploration of optical effects played a significant role in the development of the movement. His works are part of several public and private collections, and they continue to be influential in the realm of geometric abstraction and the study of visual perception. ARR

In 1962 he held a one-man exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, entitled Experiments in Serial Art, and felt aligned to the work of the Constructionist group of artists. NOTE A homage to the poems of the Russian poet and artist Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922), a founder of Russian Futurism and a leader in zaum poetry, who delved into the roots of the Russian language to compose poetry based on sounds alone. Virtually untranslatable from the original, his works frequently demonstrate minute changes in each line, taking an idea or concept through gradual changes in a way that was to be re-used much later in the work of text-influenced artists such as Bruce Nauman.
